To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PHILIP D. MAHONEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Davis, in the county of Brewster, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quilting-Frames; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in quilting frames and more particularly to the type designed to be supported by a ceiling or the like.

It has for its object the provision of a quilting frame which is designed to be knocked down and folded into small compass when not in use.

Another object is the provision of an improved form of clamp for fastening the ends and sides of the frame together and a screw combined with the clamp which is adapted to receive the terminals of the supporting elements.

With these and other objects in view as will more fully hereinafter appear, the present invention consists in certain novel details of construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of the device may be made without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

As shown in the drawings, the frame is composed of a plurality of sections, the sides are each formed of two sections designated by the numerals 5 and 6. These sections may be either of wood or metal as desired and are of suitable lengths; the section 6 being provided with a socket 7 which receives a tongue 8 of the opposite section 5, the parts being pivoted by means of the pintle Specification of Letters Patent.

9, the whole consituting an ordinary rule joint and so arranged that the sections may be folded outwardly so as to lie in the same horizontal plane. The end sections are designated by the numerals 10 and 11 and are connected together by a rule joint similar to the side sections 5 and 6. The end sections are of less length than the side sections so that when the parts are in position as shown in Fig. 1 a substantially rectangular frame will be formed. With this construction it is obvious when the side sections are detached from the end sections the sections of the sides and ends may be folded one upon the other and occupy a comparatively small space.

In order that the sections may be firmly bound together when in use suitable clamps are employed. These clamps are arranged at the corners of the frame and it will be evident from this arrangement that four clamps are employed.

Each of the clamping members is preferably formed of a single piece of metal, having a shank portion 12, one end of which terminates in a curved extension 18 the curvature extending outwardly and from the shank and terminating in an inwardly directed extension 14 which is disposed at right-angles to and spaced from the shank 12. The opposite terminal of the shank 12 terminates in a right-angular extension 15 which over-hangs the extension 14. The extension 15 is centrally provided with a threaded opening which receives the threaded shank of a bolt 16, the inner terminal of which is provided with a flat clamping head 17 and the outer terminal having an eye 18.

When the side and end sections are arranged as shown in Fig. 1.that is to say, when the free end portions of the. side sections bear on the free end portions of the end sections the combined thicknesses of the sections will be somewhat less than the distance between the right-angular extensions 14 and 16 of the clamp. Therefore, when it is desired to clamp the sections together, the clamp is adjusted, so that the extension 14 will bear on the lower face of the end section while the extension 15 will overhang the upper face of the side section. When the parts are in this position the bolt 16 is turned and the sections clamped between the head 17 and extension 14;.

By referring now to Fig. 1 it will be seen that two or more supporting elements are employed. In the present instance these elements are shown to be ropes or cables 19, which extend diagonally of the frame and the terminals of which are secured in the eyes 18 of the bolts. A suitable supporting rope is designated by the numeral 20 and terminates at one end in a hook or other fastening means which engages the ropes or cables 19 at their points of intersection or at the center of the frame. The supporting rope 20 is reeved through a series of pulleys (not shown) attached to the ceiling (not shown) and its terminal is secured within easy reach of the operator so that the frame may be raised and lowered as desired. Thus it will be seen that I have provided a device which is exceedingly simple in structure and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture,

embodying few parts and these so arranged that the danger of derangement will be reduced to a minimum.

Having thus described my invention what is claimed as new, is

A knockdown quilting frame comprising jointed side and end sections, flexible supporting elements for said sections and means for detachably and adjustably securing said sections together, said securing means being provided with eyes for the reception of the free ends of said flexible suporting elements.
