HAT-PIN.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DAVIS Mamxskv, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Pins, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled .in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to hat pins; and the object thereof is to provide an improved pin device of this class and improved means for securing the same to a hat whereby the manipulation of the pin is facilitated, and the device involving both the pin and the means by which it is secured to the hat rendered more secure and effective in open- 'tion.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the Views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat showing one method of connecting my improved pin or pins therewith, Fig. 2 a view of the pin and its attachment or securing device detached from the hat, Fig. 3 a section of the rim of the hat on the line 33 of Fig. 1, and showing also a section of the pin shown in Fig. 2, the line of section of the pin being also indicated at 33 in said Fig. 2, Fig. 4L a View similar to Fig. 2 but showing a modified form of pin device, and ;--Fig. 5 a sectional view of the modified form of construction shown in Fig. 4.

In the practice of my invention as shown in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive, I provide two U- shaped pin devices a each of which com-' prises a cross head member a having parallel projecting arms or pin members a and said arms or pin members a are provided at the ends thereof adjacent to the cross head members a with rings or eyes a, and these devices are preferably formed from spring wire bent to form the parts above described. I also provide a hat pin 1) which is similar in form to the ordinary hair pin, but comprises two side members b the ends Z2 of which are preferably bent so as to normally diverge, and the side members 6 of the pin 6 are passed through the rings or Specification of Letters Patent.

The hat pin 7) is composed of spring wire, and the tension thereof, or of the side members thereof normally throws the U shaped pin devices a or the pins or arms (4 thereof outwardly as shown in Fig. 2, and when the pin b is pushed forwardly through the rings or eyes a" the side members or arms 0* of said pin diverge, and when the said pin is pulled backwardly the said side members or arms 6 converge and the end portions 7) thereof are brought closer together.

In practice a pin device made in this manner may be secured to the bottom of the rim (Z of a hat closely adjacent to the crown opening (1 thereof as shown in Fig. 1, or it may be secured to the top of said rim and when in position, especially when secured to the top of the rim it may be covered by the ornamental trimming of the hat.

In the operation of securing the pin to the hat as shown in Fig. 1, the side or pin members a of one of the U-shaped members a are passed through or into the rim of the hat. The pin or side members a of the other U-shaped pin device a are then turned inwardly toward the rim of the hat and passed through said rim of the hat as shown in Fig. 3 and the spring side members b of the hat pin 1) always serve to hold the said U-shaped attaching devices a in the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the attaching pins or devices a will not accidentally come out or accidentally be detached from the rim of the hat, and the hat pin 6 is always held in position for use.

In the construction shown in Figs. 4 and 5 I have shown a hat pin 6 composed of spring wire bent centrally to form a ring or eye 6 which constitutes the head of the pin and the side members e are bent so as to cross each other, and the attaching pin or device is composed of two U-shaped or yoke-shaped double in members f, the cross head portions of which are provided centrally with rings or eyes f and are connected by a link member 9 composed, in the form of construction shown, of two parts the'ends of which are connected by sleeves g on which the rings or eyes 7 are placed.

The attachment of this form of device to the hat or hat rim, or the connection thereof with the hat or the hat rim, will be substantially the same as with the construction shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and the operation of, and the manipulation of the hat pin 6, will also be substantially the same as with that shown in 2.

In the construction shown in Fig. 2, the central link-shaped member which connects the cross head portions a of the U-shaped pin devices a is of much less transverse dimensions than the lengths of said cross head portions, and with this construction the U shaped pin devices a may be placed in difierent positions, as will be readily understood, and this will facilitate the connection of the device with the hat as the said U-shaped pin devices a need not necessarily be in exact corresponding positions and one of said pin devices may be placed inwardly of the other if desired.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein described hat pin and hat pin attaching device comprising two U-shaped attaching members the cross head portions of which are pivotally connected with an intervening member and provided with eyes, and a hat pin comprising two elastic side portions which are passed through said eyes.
