Specification of Letters Patent.

To all wlwm it may concern:
Be it known that I, CnAnLns J. DAIILGREN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Button-Fastener, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved button fastener arranged to permit the wearer of a garment, hat or other wearing apparel, to quickly and securely fasten a button to the wearing apparel. Another object is to permit the use of the fastener on various types of buttons such as cloth buttons, apertured buttons, eye buttons and the like. Another object is to provide a fastener which is simple and durable in construction and cheap to manufacture. With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described-and then specifically pointed outin the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanyhdrawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

The button fastener in its general construction consists of a staple 10 and a head or a back plate 11, of which the staple 10 is adapted to engage with its bent portion 12 a button 13 to be fastened to the material 14 ofi a garment, hat, shoes or other In case the button 13 is provided with an eye 15 then the bent portion 12 of the staple 10 engages the said eye, as plainly shown in Fig. 1, and in case it is a cloth button the staple is engaged with the attaching portion at the back of such button, and in case the fastener is used on an apertured button 16, such as shown in Fig. 5, then the staple is engaged with opposite apertures 17, as illustrated in Fig; 5.
Thehead 11, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, is preferably made in the form of a plate of sheet metal or other sheet material and consists of a base member 20 provided with a central aperture 21 through which the side arms 22-of the staple 10 are. passed after the side arms of the staple are pushed through the material H. as indicated in Fig. l. The head 11 is further provided with a retaining member 23 integrally connected at one side by a neck 24 with one side of the base member 20, said neck being preferably integral with base member 23, and a capping member'25 is similarly connected at one side by a, neck 26 with the other side of the base member 20 so that the two members 23 and 25 are comiccted with the opposite sides of the central member 20. The side members 22 of the saplc 10 are made sullieicnt'ly long that after they are pushed through the central aperture 21 and bent over in opposite directions and at a right angle to the side members 23 and 25 their terminals project beyond the peripheral edge. of the base member 20, as plainly indicated in Fig. 2. The retaining member 23 is now bent over on the base member 20 and then the terminals of the side members 22 are bent over on the outer face of the retaining member 23, as plainly'indicated in Fig. 3, and finally the capping member 25 is bent overtoovcrliethe retaining member 23 and the terminals of the side arms 22 of the staple 10 (see Fig. 4). It will be noticed that by the arrangement described the side arnn: 22 of the staple 1.0 are firmly engaged with the retaining member 23 and the capping member 25 practically incloses the retaining member 23. the base member 20 and the portions of the staple engaging the retaining member 23.
The base member preferably provided with a central ridge 30 surrounding the central opening 21 and adapted to abut against the rear fa e of the material 14. as plainly indicated in Figs. 1 and 5. The base member 20 is further provided with a rim flange 31 adapted to 20 of the head 11 is inclose the retaining member 23 and the bent portions of the side arms 22 extending around the edge of the said retaining member 23 (see 'Figs. 1 and 3). The capping member 25 is provided with a rim flange 32 adapted to inclose the rim flange 31 thus practically forming a firm, close joint with the rim flange 31 of the base member 20, as Will be readily understood. by reference to Fig. 1. The rim flange 31 is provided with cut-out portions 33, 3% for the passage of the necks 24; and 26 when bending the retaining member 23 and the capping member 25 over into closed posi' tion, as previously explained. It will be noticed that portions of the side members 22 of the staple 10 extend betveen the base member 20 and the overlying retaining member 23, and the terminals of the said side arms 22 extend between the retaining member 23 and the capping member 25 so that the staple is not liable to be pulled out of the head even in case the button 13 is subjected to a very severe strain.
In practice, the head 11 is made of thin sheet metal, and the base member 20, the retaining member 23 and the capping member 25 are preferably madein disk tori-n, and the necks 2i and 26 are made narrow so as to permit of conveniently bending the members 23 and 25 over, as above explained. The capping member is preferably slightly dished, as indicated in Figs. 1 and 5.
In case the button fastener is used ror anapertured button, as shown in Fig. then use is preferably made of a tubular Washer 40 interposed between the back of the but ten 16 and the face of the material lat and inclosing portions of the side arms of the staple extending from the button to the material 14. By the use of this Washer 40 the button 16 is properly spaced from the face of the material 14 to accommodate the part of the Wearing apparel to be engaged by the button 16.
The button fastener shown and described is very simple and durable in construction and can be readily applied for attaching a button to the material of a garment, hat, shoe, or other wearing apparel and without the use of special tools, the bending of the points being done with the lingers of the user. In case it is desired to disconnect the button it is only necessary for the user to bend With the fingers the capping member 25 back into the position shown in Fig. 3, then bending the terminals of the side arms 22 of the staple 10 out of engagement with the retaining member 23 to allow of bending the latter outward into open position, as shown in Fig. The side members 22 of the staple are then bent toward each irther to aiiow of pulling the staple out the central opening 21 and out of the i113;- terial it: on exerting a pull on the button. 13, thus disconnecting the letter from the terial. Having thus described my invention, claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:-
i. 5. A button fastener for fastening a butfiange of the said base the said head, the latter havingv integrally at one ton to wearing-apparel, comprising a staple adapted to engage the button and adapted '45 to have its side arms pushed through the material of the Wearing apparel, and a retaining means adapted to engage the under side of the apparel material and having a base member-and integral side members, the base member being apertured for the assage of the side arms of the staple, portions of the said side arms being bent overon the outer face of the base member, one of the said side members being a retaining member bent over and overlying the said base member and portions of the side arms extending between the said base member and the said retaining member, the terminals of the said side arms being bent overthe outer face of the said retaining member and the other-side member being a capping member and being bent over and overlying the said retaining member and the terminals of the said side arms.
