This invention relates to improvements in combined pencil holders and sharpeners and has for its object the provision of an improved device of this character which will hereinafter be more fully described and claimed.

Fig. 4 is a slightly modified form of the device. 1n the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 designates a lead pencil of any ordinary construction, being preferably circular in cross section.

The numeral Qdesignates the improved attachment for the pencil. This attachment 2 comprises a s lit sleeve 3 constructed of some ordinary exible material so that the same may be readily adjusted upon the penoil 1 and being effectively retained thereon, while, at the same time allowing the device to be slid upon the pencil when desired. The sleeve 3 is preferably cross sectionally cylindrical andif desired the outer portion of the device maybe employed for retaining a suitable rubber to be used as an eraser, when desired. The spaced open edges of the sleeve 3 are each centrally provided with an arcuate cut away portion 4-, which is adapted to serve as a finger hold, whereby the said device may be. adjusted upon a pencil. The

- opposite or closed face'of the sleeve is provided with a suitable cut away portion or pocket 5 and this pocket 5 is normally adapted'for the reception of the knife member 6 of the operating section 7.

By reference to Fig. 1 of the drawing, it-

will be noted that thepocket 5 has its upper portion provided with an ofiset part 8 and that'the knife member 6 of the element 7 is also provided with an offset cut away portion so as to adapted to fit within. the offset portion 8 of provide areduced extension 9- the said sleeve 3. The operating section 7 is preferably constructed of steel or other suitable resilient material which is adapted to retain the sharpened edge and the knife portion 6 of the device has its outer face of a convex formation so as to agree with the circular cross sectional contour of the sleeve 8 and at the same time provide acutting edge which is not apt to become easily dulled and which may be readily and quickly sharpened.

The holding element 10 of the device is pivotally connected with the face of the sleeve as at 11, and it will be noted by reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing that the point,

of connection of the member 10 with the lower extremity of the sleeve 3 is enlarged as at 12, so as to add to the resiliency of the holding element 10. The lower extremity of the holding element 10 is bent outwardly awa from the pencil 1, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, thus providing a means whereby the said element 10 1 may be readily and quickly attached to the pocket of the owner.

When the device is to be changed from a holdin element to a knife the sleeve 3 is slid o the pencil 1, and the member 7 is reversed upon its pintle l1, so'as to position the holding element within the cut away portion or pocket 5, thus placing the knife member 6 in operative position. The device may then berepositioned upon the end of the pencil and ready for use.

The offset or cut away portion of the knife 6 provides a means whereby a point may be readily given to the pencil when the wooden portion thereof has been cut away. It is to be understood that the device may be readily employed for sharpening the penoil to which it is attached when desired, and

it will be also noted that by constructing the member 7 of suitable steel or other flexible material, the said member ay have its knife 6 or its holding element 1 readily sustained in position Wit-hill the pocket 5. I

In Fig. 4 I have shown a slightly modified form of the device. In this figure the blade is substantially flattened and the sleeve 3 is provided at its upper extremity with an eraser member.
