PENCIL-SHARPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1919.
Application filed April 3, 1918. Serial No. 226,480.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB Rnu'rrMeNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county, of Cochise, State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil-Sharpeners, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying draw ings, forming a part hereof.
This invention relates to a pencil sharpener and particularly to a construction comprising a pencil point protector, sharpener and pocket holder adapted for application to a pencil and to be carried thereon in use.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved construction of pencil holder with a wood cutter and a point sharpener and protector mounted thereon beyond one end, and also an eflicient pocket clip carried by said holder.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved construction of point protector and sharpener having an oval abrasive inner face and adapted to be mounted beyond the end of the holder by means of a plate carrying the wood cutting member.
A further object of the invention is to rovide a construction adapted to be formed from sheet material in two partsthe pencil point sharpener being adaptedto be pivotally mounted upon the pencil holder by means of a plate one end of which comprises the spring pocket clip and the opposite end a point sharpener and protector.
()ther and further objects of the invention will be hereinafter set forth and the novel features thereof defined by the appended claims. 7
Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view at right angles to Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end View of the point sharpener.
Fig. 1 is a sectional view on line H of Fig. 1.
Fig. 5 is a similar view on Fig. 1.
Like numerals refer to like parts in the several views of the drawings.
The numeral 10 designates a tubular pencil holder which is split for expansion at its inner end as shown at 11 and the oppoline 5-5 of site end thereof tapered at 12 to conform to the proper taper to be given a pencil. This tapered portion is provided with an opening 13through which the knife member 22 carried by the plate 16 extends inward to en age the pencil wood. The holder 10 is provided with pivoting lugs 14: which may be mounted thereon in any desired manner for instance formed by portions out from the body of the holder and bent outward.
The point sharpening member 15 is disposed beyond the end of the tapered portion 12 of the holder and partially over-laps the same. This point sharpener may be mounted in any desired manner preferably by means of the plate 16 which is formed with pivoting lugs 17 adapted to receive the pivot 18 extending through the lugs 14 of the holder, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. The inner end of the plate 16 is extended to form a spring pocket ch 19 by which the pencil and holder may e retained in the pocket of the user in the usual manner.
The pencil point protector 15 may be of any desired configuration but an oval or elongated form thereof as shown at 20 in Figs. 3 and 5 has been found most desirable as it permits the pencil point to engage the abrasive surfaceQl upon the interior sharpener casing 15and also allows the casing to act as a protector for the pencil point which projects beyond the holder. As shown, the casing 15 is open at one side to permit free discharge of material therefrom.
In the use of the invention it will be seen that the wood cutter carried by the holder provides the proper taper to the pencil leaving an extended portion to the graphite or lead which is properly sharpened by its engagement of the point protector. When used as a protector the plate 16 and point protector sharpener will assume normal position and exert no pressure by reason of the oval shape opening in the point sharpener. It will be seen that the invention provides a very efiicient and economical construction of pencil sharpener adapted to be produced from two parts of sheet material and one in which the pencil lead is not liable to be broken or injured in the wood cutting action but is separately pointed.
It will be observed that the over-lap between the point sharpener and the pencil holder limits the extent of movement at the same time bringingthe abrasive surface of the point sharpener in the position to properly taper the lead without continuation of the wood. cutting action.
It will be observed that the member mount- 7 ed upon the holder has formed therefrom the Wood cutting knife, the point protector and sharpener and the spring with retaining oli l khat is claimed is 1. In a email sharpener and holder a tubular mem her, a plate mounted thereon and provided With a cuttingv knife extending through an aperture in said member, and a point sharpener carried by the outer end of said plate and over-lapping the end of said holder.
*2. In a pencil sharpener, a tubular holder open at its opposite ends, pivoting lugs provided thereon, an arm mounted in said lugs, and a point sharpener carried by the outer end of said arm and over-lapping the end of said holder, and a knife member carried by said arm and extending through an aperture in said holder.
3. In a pencil sharpener, a holder having a taper slotted end, pivoting lugs extended therefrom, an arm pivoted in said lugs and provided with a cutter blade extending through the slot of the holder, and a point sharpener and protector open at one side and having a substantially oval interior face a portion of which is provided with an abrasive surface.
This specification signed and witnessed this 22nd day of March A. D. 1918.
