This invention relates topencil sharpeners. i

An important object of the invention is to provide a pencil Sharpener which will quickly and efficiently cut away the wood of the pencil and at the same time scrape the graphite point.

A further object of the invention is the provision of a'sharpener of this Acharacter which will firmly fit upon the extremity of the pencil and form a'desirable tapering point thereon.

A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which is extremely durable, yet comparatively simple in construction and efficient for this purpose.

Other objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 10 generally indicates a conventional type of pencil, being constructed with the usual graphite pointand a tubular casing.

Referring more particularly to my improved sharpener the numeral 11 designates a tubular guide sleeve adapted to fit snugly over the extremity of the pencil and guide the movement of the Sharpener 'during its rotation. The intermediate portion of the guide sleeve 11 is provided with a collar 12 which may be formed by enlargement of the guide sleeve or may be separately connected thereon. The collar 12 is adaptedto support an extension bracket or ear 13 formed upon the side of the guide sleeve and ,adapted to permit holding of the Sharpener durin'g rotation of the pencil. An angular arm 14 is formed upon the rear portion of the bracket 13, this arm extending in alignment with the guide sleeve 11 and adapted to contact with the pencil 10 when the same has been insertedrwithi'n the sleeve, thereby bracing the pencil and preventing displacement of the same. A suitable opening -15'is preferably formed in the bracket 13 and lpermits securing of the fastener' upon a 'desk in `order to retain the Sharpener rmly in position and permit sharpening of a pencil by merely inserting the same in the Sharpener and rotating the pencil.

Formed integral with and extending forwardly from the guide sleeve 11 are a plurality of spiral ribs 16, these ribs gradually tapering in a conical manner. The spiral ribs 16 are substantially triangular in cross section as clearly shown in Figure 4, the inner edge thereof having, formed thereon angular cutting blades 17. These blades are suitably formed upon the inner edge of the ribs 16 to engage the outer surface of the pencil wood, shaving the same in 'a smooth manner.

The spiral cutter and scraper are preferably enclosed by a tubular cap 20, the open end thereof snugly fitting against a suitable shoulder formed on the forward extremity of the guide sleeve, as clearly shown in Figure 3. A comparatively small opening 20 is formed in the cap to prevent breaking the point of the pencil. v

In use, the Sharpener may be employed by placing the same over the extremity' ofV the pencil to be sharpened and rotating the same thereon. It may also be secured in a suitable manner and the pencil inserted and rotated producing. the same result and forming a tapered point thereon. Due to the construction of the spiral rib members and blades formed thereon a desirable tapering point may be formed upona pencil with comparatively little effort, the graphite extremity upon the pencil beingscraped at the y same movement and producing a line writing point. It is to be understood that the form of 'my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as the preferredexample of the same, and that various changes as to the shape, size and arrangement of partsv may be resorted to without departingy from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.,

Having thus described my invention, l claim:

l. A pencil Sharpener comprising a tubular guide sleeve, a plurality of spiral rib members formed on the forward portion of the guide sleeve and tapering in 'a conical manner, and cutting blades formed on the inner edges of the said rib members and arrangedangularly to the main body of said rib members.

2. A pencil Sharpener comprising a tubular guide sleeve, a rib member formed on the forward portion of said guide sleeve and extending from said sleeve and in a direction centrally thereof, and a cutting blade formed on the inner side of said rib member and arranged at an angle to the main body thereof.
