SKIRT-MARKER.

Be it known that I, SAMUEL S. MORITZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Columbia and State of lVashington, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Skirt-Markers, of which the following is a specification.

The object of this invention is the provision of improvedmeans whereby the skirts of womens garments may be conveniently and accurately marked at a uniform distance from the ground.

The invention consists in the novel construction, adaptation and combination of devices, as will be hereinafter described and claimed. v

In the accompanying drawings, illustrating an embodiment of my invention: Figure 1 is a front elevation; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a longitudinal vertical section ,and Fig. l is a horizontal section.

The reference numeral 5 designates the base wherefrom extend upwardly posts 6 to support a platform 7. 'lhe aforesaid'parts are connected together to furnish .a rigid structure and constitute the frame `of the apparatus. Extending through the platform and having its lower end seated in a step bearing 8 in said base' is an upright screw 9 which is arranged to be rotated by suitable means, such-as a 'handle-'stick (not shown) inserted in a socketed head 10. Said screw is prevented from endwise motion through the medium of a collar plate 11 fitting within a peripheral groove'in the screw and rigidly secured tothe frame-platform. Intermediate said platform and base is an elevator 12 arranged for vertical movement upon guide-rods 13 which-are'rigidly connected to the frame members 5 and 7.

The elevator is provided with a boss 12" having a screw-threaded hole to 'accommodate the screw so that when the latter is rotated it will impart corresponding up or down movements to the elevator. Provided in the elevator and arranged to extend in substantially radial directions with respect to the screw is a plurality of waysjlt for the horizontal bars 15.- The bars are severally provided at their outer ends with upwardly extending arms 16 which, in turn, arel provided at their upper extremities with -arcuate, elements 17, whichV will be hereinafter designated as conformers, andv arranged to have their convex sides directed outwardly, as represented in Fig. 2. ated with each of saidconformers and positioned exteriorly thereof are other arcuate elements 18 and referred to hereinafter as the clamping jaws Such jaws are arranged to have their upper edges at some distance (say one-half of an inch) below they corresponding edges of the complementary conformers 17.

The clampingjaws 18 are provided at, or near, their mid-lengths with downwardly extending arms 19 which are hingedly connec'ted with the respective aforementioned arms 16, as by the pivotal pins 20 extending through the latter and ears 21 provided upon the arms 19. 22 are screw studs'projecting from the arms'l and through apertures, such as 19 of the arms 19, to receive outsideof the latter winged nuts 23 whereby the clamping actions of the jaws andthe conformers are effected.

' For the purpose of aifording a steady rest for a person when standing upon the platform, handles 29 are provided and may be grasped by the person. These handles are desir'ably formed upon a T-shaped attachment 30 of an upright bar 31 which is supported by an extension 32 to the frame base 5. l

A block 33 is secured upon the platform at f the front and is-formed with two concavities the -top edges -of the'clamping jaws 18 to a predetermined elevation above the platform, graduate marks, such as 34, are provided upon the posts 6 and are appropriately arranged to register with the top edges of the bars 26. Graduate marks 35 are also provided upon the bars 15 to furnish means for properly setting out the individual clamping jaws and conformers when the fullness of a skirt to be measured is known; otherwise the outsetting of said elements V'would be accomplished through trial after the person takes her stand rupon the plats form.

' The operation ofthe invention is as follows: The screw 9 is first manipulated to raise, through agency ofthe elevator l2, the jaws 18 to present the top edges thereof in a horizontal plane above the top of the Vplatform Vto an amount equal to the distance which 'the persons dress which is to be marked will clear the floor, or at the level whereat a marking for a tuck or the like is to be made. Vhen the proper elevation lof the jaws is obtained the elevator is secured against displacement by utilizing the screws 28. The bars 15 are then successively lmoved in or out., as required, to accommodate the circumferential size of the garment and thereupon the bars are secured in place by the nutted screws 24, as before explained. The person whose skirt is to be marked now ascends the platform and stands thereon in her natural posture and with the toes of her feet against the block 33 and, if she desires, may support herself by clasping in lher hands the handles 29. The bottom of the skirt is then introduced between the conformers and jaw members 17 and 18 and, when it is hanging properly, the nuts 23 are actuated -tocause the skirt to be clamped between said conformers and jaws, as represented 'in F ig. 3. Then the operator circumscribes the skirt fabric `with a piece of 4chalk so as to have the latter mark against the jaws 18 and against the backing afforded vby the confo'rmers 17 within the skirt.

The invention is comparatively inexpensive to construct and is simple and convenient to operate, 'while rendering etlicien-t service in the accomplishment of the Yobjects for `which intended.

Vhat I claim as my invention-is- 1. A skirt marker consisting of a frame comprised of a base, a superposed platform, and posts extending upwardly from the base for supporting' said platform, in combina tion with an elevator positioned between said base and platform, means for effecting vertical movements to said elevator. bars connected for radial adjustments with the elevator, arms extending upwardly from said bars, arcuate conformers carried at the up* per ends of the respective arms, an arcuate clamping jaw provided for each of said conformers and severally provided with a downwardly extending arm which is pivotally connected with the respective of the aforementioned arms, and screw devices for causing said jaws to be brought into .clamp- V ing relation with the respective conformers.

2. In a skirt marker, the combination with a frame including a platform, an elevator connected with the frame for vertical movements with respect to said platform, means for accomplishing such movements of the elevator, of a plurality of conformers carried by said elevator and arranged for radial adjustments with respect to the elevator, arcuate jaws for the respective conformer-s, and means whereby the couples of jaws and conformers are caused to coperate to afford clamping members.

A skirt marker consisting of la fra-me composed of a base, a Vsuperposed platform, and posts extending upwardly from the base for supporting said platform, in combination with an elevator positioned between said base and platform, screw devices for effecting vertical movements to said elevator, bars connected for radial adjustments with the elevator, means for securing Ithe bars in adjusted positions to said elevator, arms extending upwardly from said bars, arcuate conformers carried at the upper ends of kthe respective arms, devices slidably connected within the adjacent ends of said conformers, an arcuate clamping jaw provided for each of said conformers and severally provided with a Adownwardly extending arm which is pivotally connected with the respective of the `aforenamed arms, and `screw devices lfor causing .the said jaws to be brought into clamping relation with the respective conformers.

A skirt .marker consisting of a frame composed of a base, a superposed platform, and posts extending upwardly from the base for supporting said platform, in combina.- tion with an elevator positioned between said base and platform, means for Ieie'cting vertical movements to said elevator, bars connected for 'radial adjustments with the elevator, arms extending upwardly from said bars, arcuate conformers carried at the upper` ends of the respective arms, an larcuate 'clamping jaw provided for each of said conformers and severally provided 'with .a downwardly extending arm which is pivotally connected with the respective of the aforenamed arms, and screw devices for causing said jaws lto be brought 'into clamping relation with the respective conformers. an upright steady-rest connected with the frame base, and a block secured upon said platform and serving as a stop for the toes of a lperson occupying the platform.
