(Cl. f22S-'526) 1 Claim. l "Thislinventionrelates to 'a device for use in hanging paper and similar wall coverings and particularly concerns a ladder construction which will greatly facilitate the work of the paperhanger of decorator in applying such covering vto cei-ling's.
fIt is among the objects of v"the `'present in-vention to provi'deva `ladder construction which will function to support the paper or similar covering against the ceiling, thus dispensing with the use of additional equipment or the need for an assistant for this purpose.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision, of a device of the type described which is simple in construction, and therefore easy to manufacture at a relatively low cost.
The foregoing and other objects and features of the invention will be made fully apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 shows the ladder construction of the present invention in front elevation with the ladder in extended position.
Figure 2 shows the same in side elevation.
Figure 3 shows a section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, a pair of ladder sections comprising an upper section indicated generally at I and a lower section indicated generally at II are arranged to provide an extensible ladder construction which may be adjusted to varying heights in a manner which will hereinafter be made apparent. The upper section I0 includes a pair of legs I2 having a plurality of rungs or steps I3 secured on the front edge of said legs, and the lower section II includes a pair of legs I4 having rungs or steps I5 inserted therein to be iiush with the front surface thereof. A pair of boards I6, one secured to the rear edge of each of the legs I2, project inwardly beyond the inner faces of said legs, and provide with the legs I2 and the rungs I3 a pair of channels in which the lower section II is adapted to be slidably retained.
In order to permit the two sections of the ladder to be secured in any one of a plurality of adjusted positions, the legs I2 of the section III are provided with a plurality of equally spaced alignedopei'i'ngs I'I and the legs' I4 of 'the' lwer section I'I .are `provided with .similarly spaced andaligned openings .I8 adapted 'to register-with said openings'l'! t0 'the end that a llll'rallty O' securing pins I9 may be 'inserted through'two or more pairs of registering openings.
A pair of arms "2l lproviding paper `supports, are hinged to the legs I2 of the upper section I'Il 'at the upper ends of 'said legs. The arms 21 may be folded upon the uppermost of the rung-s I3 of the section I0 and when unfolded constitute outwardly projecting and aligned extension of this rung. The upper edge of the uppermost of the rungs I3 together with the upper edge of the projecting arms 2| constitute a horizontally extending paper support of substantially greater length than the width of the ladder.
A pair of brackets 23 secured to the outer sides of the legs I2 by means of bolts 24, project angularly from the upper ends of said legs. The brackets 23 extend rearwardly and upwardly from the ladder structure and support at their outermost ends a horizontal rod 25. The rod 25 may be formed of iron or steel and may be secured to the brackets 23 by bolts 26 extending through eyes 21 in downwardly bent end portions of the rod 25.
A pair of arms 30 are pivotally secured, as indicated at 3I, to the legs I4 of the lower section I I in a position to be folded inwardly between the two legs I4 after being extended outwardly in the manner shown in Figure 2 to support the ladder structure in a generally upright position.
In operation, the ladder is set up to approximately the desired height through the adjustment provided by the pins I9 and the aligned openings II and I8. In this position the rod 25 will lie close to the ceiling, and the paper to be attached to the ceiling is laying over the rod 25. It will be seen that the distance of the rod 25 from the ceiling may be closely adjusted by swinging the arm 3U farther out from or closer to the legs I4 thus permitting the rod to support the paper directly against the ceiling. The
operator will normally position the ladder so that the paper strip will be supported at about the center -of the length of the strip to which the paper is to be applied. The operator secures the paper to the wall at one side of the ladder, Working out to the end thereof, and then repeats the operation on the opposite side of the ladder.
It will be apparent, that Where desired, the paper support provided by the upper edge of the uppermost of the rungs I3 together with the outwardly extended arms 2| may be utilized to hold the paper against the ceiling, the brackets 23 and vthe rod 25 being removed. In this case it will be apparent that the upper edge of the arms 2| will be brought closely adjacent the ceiling in the manner which has been described with respect to the rod 25.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the invention provides a ladder construction for paperhangers, and decorators which provides a paper support which may be adjustably positioned relative to the ceiling by the adjusting supporting means of the ladder. It will also be seen that the device may be collapsed into a compact form for convenient carrying.
While there has been herein described a preferred embodiment of the invention, other embodiments within the scope of the appended claim .will be apparent to those skilled in the art from a consideration of the form shown and the teachings hereof.
A device for use in hanging paper and the like comprising a pair of telescopically arranged ladder sections including a top section and a lower section, means for securing said ladder sections together in any one of a plurality of aligned positions to provide a ladder of predetermined length, paper supporting means carried by the upper end of said top section, said paper supporting 'means including a pair of brackets attached to the upper end vof said upper section and projecting rearwardly and upwardly, a horizontally extending rod connecting the outer ends of said brackets, means pivotally secured to said lower section for supporting said sections in an upright position and adjustable to move said paper supporting means toward or away from a ceiling to be papered, said last mentioned means comprising a pair of legs pivotally secured to said lower section in parallel spaced relation, said legs each being provided with an outwardly projecting pin adjacent the middle thereof, a pair of notched arms pivotally secured to said lower section at points spaced from and beneath said legs, said notched arms being operatively engageable with said pins.
