Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed February 18, 1907, Serial No. 357,806. Renewed June 24, 1909. Serial No. 504,155.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Gross Lo'rzn, subject of the Russian Emperor, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention pertains to a dust pan, and has for its object to provide a construction that will prevent the dust or dirt collected in the pan, from falling out, or being thrown out, so that the collection of the dust or dirt can be continued until all of it is gathered, or until the pan is full without the necessity of removing the dust or dirt before the pan can be used for a new collection.

My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and in which- Figure 1 is a side view; Fig. 2 a vertical section; Fig. 3 a cross section of the utensil; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 illustrating the working of the swinging partition within the pan, while in use. a

My new dust pan consists of a box shaped receptacle a, the forward edges 12 of the side walls 0 of which are sloping as with the hitherto used dust pans. The bottom 0? of said receptacle, is at its forward end bent upward, and then sloped downward, the raised portion a forming a shoulder or projection that will retain the dust or dirt accumulated in the receptacle at the beginning of the turning or lowering of the pan into the position into which it is brought for collection of dust or dirt.

The receptacle a is provided with a cover f that covers the box from the rear up to the sloping forward edges thereof, which cover may be soldered to the metal box or otherwise secured thereto.

Within the receptacle and at some distance to the rear of the shoulder e, a plate or partition 9 is arranged that extends throughout the entire width of the box and that by means of lateral pintles or projections h engaging in circular apertures 2' in the side walls 0 thereof is capable of swinging in vertical direction. The cover f of the box is provided with a nose 7' that projects downward to the rear of the swinging plate or partition and owing to which the latter will be allowed to swing with its lower part rearward only, as indicated by the arrow w in Fig. 2. Thus when the dust is collected, the partition 9 will be held in closed position by the nose j. But when the receptacle is lifted with its forward end upward, the partition 9 will by its own gravity swing with its lower end rearward and permit the dust gathered on the forward end of the receptacle to fall into the space behind the partition.

At the rear of the box, one of the side walls is formed with an opening 72 that serves for the removal of the dust or dirt collected in the box and that normally may be closed up by a sliding door Z.

What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A dust pan comprising a receptacle hav ing a bottom, top, sides, and a rear end wall, the bottom being bent upward near its forward end to form a dirt retaining shoulder and then sloped forward and downward, a transverse partition rotatively mounted in said receptacle so that when hanging vertically it is positioned at a distance in the rear of said shoulder, a nose projecting from the top of the receptacle downward into the path of said partition to prevent the lower portion of said partition from swinging forward, and a door at the rear of the receptacle.
