Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 133, i899. Serial lilo. 4%,519.
To all whom it may concern: Be it known that l, Ill-onerous JOSEPH BonILLAnn, a subject of the King ct Great.
Britain, residing in the city of Uttawa, in the county of (Jarleton, Province of @nterio, Dominion of Canada, have inventetl certain new and useful improvements in Corner- Stays for Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
he invention relates to improvements in corner stays for boxes and. the'like as descrihetl in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.
lhe invention consists of a corner device of sheet metal or other suitable material anti the object is-to provide adeyice of this class that will rigidly support and bind the ends, sides, bottoms, alKllOPS of boxes against displacement, that may be easily applied and economical tomanufacture. n the drawings: Figure l is a plan View of a box showing my corner-stay. Fig. 2. is a side elevation of Fig. 1. Fig. 3. is an enlarged view of my device. Fig. &, is an isometrical view. Fig. 5, is an enlarged horizontal section at y g/ of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawingsin which like letters of reference indicate similar parts in each fig ure; AA is a piece of metal having the side flanges ll-{1, and the flanges B-B at'euoh ench 'lhe flanges 6-4] are provided with intlentat-ions or burs Z.
D-D are pieces or flaps stamped out of the flanges E F; of the metal A A.
E is a frame, preferably of WOOCl, although any suitable material may be used, adapted to fit between the four corner stays as shown.
Theinetztl lie -A. is bent along the. line C to i'orm a right angle, having the sides ii-A. The side flanges C t,- are then folded or bent over the sides jh-:h, along the lines --Trl, in such manner as to leave suilicicnt and cities i ll."'*ll to allow for the insertion of a sheet suitable material, in
, 5 V g lornnn g the sit-lo oi: the hon, Zine material ce between the flanges tL-il is bent upon itself to fit into the space be tween the bent or folciecl fienges {l -C and the sides A-A and is securely held there by seine; pressed against the inclentations or burs L in said flanges.- lhe stsmgoetl out pieces or flaps DD are bent inwartlly and downwardly, along the line K-l, to embrace the folded flanges C-C on the sides fix-5h.
at the points 3. s. forming therewith the corner supports for the-top and bottom of the box respectively. The frame. E is then placed between the four corner stays and over the top and bottom of the box, and fixedly secured in this position by the flanges B-B bent over it along the line GG- and more securely fastened thereto by suitable fasteners through the holes Xin said flanges. It must however be understood that neither the holes nor any fasteners are a necessity oi. my invention.
In manufacturing this box any suitable inateiiel may be used cncl my corner stay Wlll he found equally adaptable and satisfectory preferablyl use sulfid pulp sheets as being readily handled, light and econom- -icalthe box being collapsible takes up very little room in transit with a proportionatcly large saving in the cost of freight. h
Changes in the form, proportion anti the minor details or" construction mey he resorted to without departing from the principie, 0!. sacrificing any of the-advantages of this invention. j
What I claim for my invention lSZ- A corner stay for boxes, having folded sitlc flanges, and proviclctl'with extended entl flanges having. therein flaps adapted to bend inwardly and downwardly over said folded side flanges to secure the sides and ends of the 005T, and to form in combination, with said folded side flanges supports in? the top llllti bottom of th hon, all subsist tially as (lcseribetll.
