Be it known that I, Jol-1N I5. BoA'rniGi-ir, a citizen of the United States, residing at Del Rio, county of Valverde, and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Guards, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to book guards, that is, to devices adapted to facilitate handling heavy books, such as ledgers and the like so as to avoid the wear incident to dragging the same over a desk or table.

lhe object of my invention is to provide heavy books with means whereby the same ma y be readily and easily moved about upon the desk or table without lifting the same and without wearing the same by frictional contact therewith.

A. further object of myA invention is to provide a device of the class mentioned which may be readily attached to any book desired.

A. further object of my invention is to provide a book guard which shall be of simple construction and of low cost to manufacture.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

IVith these objects in view my invention consists generally in the device and the various details of construction and arrangements of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book equipped with guards embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an end view of the book upon an enlarged scale, the cover to which the device is secured being shown in section, Fig. 3 is a transverse section on the line .fra2 of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 is a detail section taken on substantially the line y-g/ of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the socket members and rollers.

Referring now to the drawing, 1 indicates a book such as a heavy ledger or the like and 2 the cover thereof. Secured to the cover 2 are the book guards 3-3. In the drawing I have illustrated two guards arranged upon the book but it is to be understood that if it is desired but one may be used to advantage.

l The guards are identical in form and in the l application to the book.

Each guard comprises a strip preferably of metal bent double forming the inner and outer arms 4 and 5 respectively and socket members secured to the latter and provided with rollers. llhe metal strip is preferably flat and where it is bent is shaped to conform to the outer edge of the cover 2, as at G. The arms 4 and 5 extend substantially the width of the cover 2 and their free or inner ends are secured together by a small screw or rivet 7 which passes through said ends and the book cover as shown in detail in Fig. 4.

8 indicates socket members secured to the arm 5. These are preferably formed integrally with short metal base straps or members 9 riveted to the arm 5. See Fig. 3.

10 indicates the rivets for securing the members 8 to the arm 5, the ends of the members 9 being perforated as at 11 to receive the same. The sockets are substantially spherical and arranged within the same are the ball rollers 1Q, which project slightly beyond the socket and upon which the book rests.

The sockets and rollers are quite small in order not to interfere with the accustomed use of the book and when the device is placed on the book when the latter is manufactured the cover 2 is provided with the grooves or recesses 18 and 14 to receive the arms 4 and 5 respectively, although it is obvious that the device may be readily placed upon any book without providing the grooves 13 and 14.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

An attachment for books comprising a metal strip bent double to embrace the cover of the book, the ends of said strip being perforated, spherical socket members provided with base flanges secured to said strip and ball rollers mounted in said socket members, substantially as described.
