Letters Patent N o. 94.368', dated August 3l, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN EMBOSSINGJRESSES.
The'schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pim:` of the same.
To all whom Ait ana/y concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. WLLLBUR, of Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Embossing-Presses; and I do hereby declare that the following isa full and complete description oi' the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l is a side view.
Figure 2 is a vertical section.
LikeA letters of reference refer to like parts.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of a simple and convenient press for embossing,
to be used for stamping, .in raised or embossed work,
initial letters, monograms, seals, 86e.; and consists of a combination of levers in such a manner as to obtain the requisite power ina compact and simple form.
In the drawings- A represents a frame, of metal, of suitable form and size, divided in the central portion to give space for' the play ofthe lever.
The i'rarne has a bed, B, which connects the lower part.
` Above the bed B is placed an arm, C, pvoted in and to the frame A, at c. The forwardvendof said arm C is made broad, and has a groove, into which a ,'die, a, may besecnred.
Under the front end of the arm C, and attached to the frame A, is a rocker-plate, D, which holds a counter-die, b, these dies having engraved in them any desired figures.
In the top of the frame A Iis placed a set-screw, E.
Between this set-screw E and the arm C, are placed levers f g h, connected, at their intersection, by a knee-joint.
lhe lever h is pivotcd to a swinging-handle lever, Z.
The lever l, at the lower end, where it connects with the l'ever h, is rounded, so as to form a cam.
Underneath the bed B is secured a spring, k, by a screw, n.
Through the bed is a hole, in 'which a piu, P, plays, between the arm C and spring k, the spring operating upon it to raise the arm G, when the pressure is removed, separating the dies.
IThis press is very simple, and cheap in construction, and bein-g strongand powerful, is well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
I do not claim separately either the hinged arm which carries the die, or the toggles, link, and lever for operating the saine,` as I am aware that when so considered, these features are not new; but
What I claim asmy improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The employment, in an embossing-press, in connection with the hinged arm C, carrying the die of the..
toggles f g, linkJt, and cam-lever l, all constructed and arranged substantially as herein described, whereby an increasing and continuing pressureis applied `to the arm C, thus making a perfect impression.
Also, in combination with the hinged arm C, carrying the die of an embossing-press, the pin P and spring 1.', the toggles fg, link l1, and cam-lever Z, and the regulating-screw E, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the several purposes herein specified.
Also, the described arrangement in an embossingpress of th'e hinged arm G, carrying the die, the -rocking platen D b, pin l), and spring K, the toggles fg, link h, and cam-lever l, and the regulating-screw E, all mounted in a frame, A B, and constructed to operate substantially as herein set forth.
