UNITED STATEs PATENT QFFICE.
EDWARD A. sLoAT, OF STONE MILL, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FOR PUNCHING AND SHEARING METAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 122,860, dated January 16, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. SLoAT, of Stone Mill, in the county of J eii'erson and State of New York, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Punches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. I
Figure l of the drawing is a representation ofa vertical section of my invention. Fig. 2 is face view of the same.
This invention has relation to a combined punch and shears for use on cold iron and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of devices, by means of which the punch and shears are made to act simultaneously through the medium of a single operating lever.
In the accompanying drawing, A designates the post or frame, to which is secured the bedplate of the combined punch and shears. B represents said frame, cast with the brackets b b projecting from its face. The bracket 1) is slotted to form j aws, between which are pivoted an eccentric or cam-lever, 0. Below said lever are situated the jaws c c of the shears, of which the former is movable, being hinged to the bed B. This jaw is connected to the lever G by means of a pivoted link, D, and is worked by said lever. The jaw c is stationary and rests on the bracket 11 E indicates the punch-bar, arranged to Work vertically through an aperture in the bracket 0 The punch-bar is pivoted to the jaw c by means of a lug, d, the jaw 0 extending across the head of the punch. F denotes the punch-die, resting on the bracket b G are arms diverging from their rear ends, which are secured to the bed, so as to pass on either side of the lower end of the punch. The punch and shears act simultaneously when the lever O is raised or lowered. As the lever is depressed its eccentric head comes into direct contact with the upper side of the jaw 0, so that the proper force may be brought to bear on it and through it on the punch. The arms G are designed for the purpose of preventing the plate from being raised by the punch-bar.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is j The combination of the bed-plate B, camlever O, fixed jaw c, movable jaw c, retracting arm D, and punch E, shouldered at the end to engage with the shank of the movable jaw, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD A. SLOAT.
