IMPROVEMENT lN MACHINES FOR CUTTING OUT BLANKS 0F SHEET METAL.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 123,690, dated February 13, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. GATonnLL, of Old Town, in the county of Penobscot and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tin-Presses and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying draw- I annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a side elevation; and Fig. 2, a
, longitudinal vertical section of my press.
A represents the bed or base of my press, from which rises the slightly-curved standard B,both being castin one piece. (3 represents the head of the press, which is cast separate,
- and has two bolts, a a, cast with it. These bolts pass through holes in the body or standard B, and held by nuts I) I), thus firmly uniting the head to the body. From the upper side of the head 0 project two cars, d d,'between which the cam or eccentric D revolves or works, said cam being placed on a steel pin, a, and provided with a lever, E, for turning. The cam or eccentric D is, by an arm, Gr, connected with the plunger H, for operating the same, said plunger moving up and down in a circular space or hole made for that purpose in the head 0. I represents the punch, which may be either round or oval, according to the blank desired to be out, and is screwed onto the lower end of the plunger H. This punch has a beveled face, so as to give a shearing cut, and is surrounded by a cage or stripper, J, suspended by an adjustable rod, f, from the head 0. This cage or stripper prevents the tin or sheet metal following the punch when it is drawn up or back after cutting it, thereby greatly facilitating the work. K represents the female die, arranged in an opening in the bed-plate A, and adjusted by means of set-screws h h.
This press can be made far cheaper than' those now generally in use, and by making the die or punch I with a beveled face, so as to give a shearing cut, I am enabled to cut about six thicknesses at one time, while with the ordinary flat-surface punches only two can be cut at a time.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The press-head 0, cast with wrought-iron bolts a a, andattached to the body B by said bolts passing through holes in the body and fastened by bolts, substantially as herein set forth. p
2. The combination of body B, separable press-head O, plunger H, dies I K, stripper J, and bolts a a, all constructed and arranged substantially as herein set forth.
