To all whom it'may concern."
Be it known that I, HANS PFLEUMER, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, and resident of Toronto, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Jacks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to jacks and more particularly to jacks used for placing tires upon the rims of wheels after such tires have been filled with any material such as composition fillings or aerated material.
The object of my invention is to provide a cheap, simple, and efiicient form of jack which can be used for exerting an outer pressure wherever needed by placing different shaped tools in the same for bearing against the material operated on.
My invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct, use, and operate my improved jack, I will describe the same more fully referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view showing several of my improved jacks in position for pressing a tire upon the steel rim of an automobile wheel. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of my improved jack on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of my improved jack. Fig. 1 is an end view of the same. Fig. 5 is a side view partly in section showing my improved jack in use for pressing a tire into position. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the setting tool. Fig. 7 is an inverted plan view of the pressure tool. Fig. 8 is a partial plan view with the opv crating member removed looking in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 4.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like parts in each of the figures of the drawm is illustrated in the drawing my improved jack has a bed plate 1, which if desired, and particularly in cases where a number of jacks are used. in conjunction with one another as shown in Fig.1 the severalapparatuses may be mounted on a single bed plate or table. is provided with a shoulder 2 at the front end of the same and said shoulder has a dove tail slot 3 extending through the same for the purpose of receiving a setting tool l which is provided with a dove tail 5 for fitting in the dove tail slot 3 of the shoulder 2 as later explained.
The rear end of the bed plate 1 is provided with a pad 6 which extends a short distance in a longitudinal direction and such pad is provided with a longitudinal dove tail slot? for the purpose of receiving a sliding bearing 8 which has a dove tail 7 for fitting into said dove tail slot. This slidlng bearing 8 is provided with a hole 9 through the center of the same for receiving the shank 10 of a regulating screw 11 and such regulating screw has a shoulder 12 on the same for resting in a recess 13 on the inner end of said sliding bearing and a threaded portion 14 which engages with a threaded hole 15 in the lugs 16 on said bed plate. The outer end of the regulating screw 11 is provided with a turning member 17 which fits over the end of said screw whilea pin 18 passes through the shank 19 of said member and through the end of said screw to hold the parts together. The upper face of the sliding bearing 8 has a double fork bearing 20 at the rear end of the same and a pair of adjusting bars 21 are pivotally secured at their lower ends in said bearing by means of a pin 22 passing through the same.
The forward end of the sliding bearing 8 is provided with a forked bearing'23 and said bearing is adapted to receive an adjusting bar 24 which is secured by its lower end in said bearing while its upper end is adapted to pass between the upper ends of the bars 21. The adjusting bars 21 and 2a are each provided with a series of holes 25 for being connected in different positions as hereinafter explained.
At a position in front of the lug 16 on the bed plate 1 is a fork bearing 26 which is adapted to receive the lower end of an adjusting screw 27 and such screw is secured in said bearing by means of a pin28 passing or nut portion 30 which is adapted to engage with the threads on said screw for lowering explained.

The pressure arm 31 is formed of a pair of horizontally disposed bars 32 which have a block 33 between the same at their front end and said block is securely fastened to said bars by means of rivets or bolt-s 34. The rear ends of the bars 31 are also provided with a block 35 between the same and said block is securely fastened between said bars by means of bolts or rivets 36 passing through the same. The bars 32 are provided with a cross-head 37 which is pivoted between the same by means of trunnions 38 and said cross-head has a hole 39 through the same for the purpose of loosely fitting over the screw 27 in order to permit the pressure arm to be raised and lowered. The upper end of the cross-head 37 is provided with suitable oiled grooves 40 for keeping the same well lubricated at the position Where the hub or nut 30 of the operating member 29 bears against the same for exerting the downward pressure on the forward end of the pressure arm 31 as later At a position near the rear of the pressure arm 31 the bars 32 are provided with a hole 41 for receiving a pin 42 which passes through said bars and through the adjusting bars 21 and 24 which latter bars extend between the bars 32 and can be adjusted to any position by placing the pin through any one of the series of holes 25 in said bars 21 and 24.
Theblock 33 is provided with a dove tail slot 43 on the lower face of the same for receiving a dove tail 44 on the upper face of a pressure tool 45 and while in Fig. 5 a tool has been shown for compressing a tire having an aerated composition filling within the same to a position on the steel rim whereby the locking rings al could be placed thereon, 1 do not limit myself to any particular design of tool or a tool intended for any particular purpose, as the shape and size of the tool employed will be covered entirely by the class of work for which the same is intended.
The use and operation of my improved jack can best be understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 5. In Fig. 1 six of the jacks are shown in position for pressing a tire filled with aerated composition onto the steel rim of an automobile wheel and the bars 21 and 24 are first adjusted to about the proper position in respect to the pressure arm 31 whereupon the pin 42 is passed through any of the series of holes 25 in said bars and through the horizontal bars 32 of said pressure arm. The rim a is then placed upon the setting tool 4 so that said rim rests in the slot 46 in the upper face of said tool and then the pressure bar 31 is lowered so that the pressure tool 45 may be adjusted to the proper position.
This tool 45 is adapted to rest by its lower end upon the movable rim 2'), and in order to get the same in proper position with the rim restingin the slot 46 of the setting tool 4, the turning member 17 is rotated so as to rotate the screw 11 in the lug 16 and such rotation will draw the movable bearing 8 either forward or backward by reason of the shank 10 of said screw being secured at both ends on said bearing. The movement of the movable bearing 8 will cause a change in the angle of the bars 21 and 24 so that the pressure member 31 will be adjusted either forward or backward and thus the pressure tool 45 can be regulated to exert pressure at the required spot. After the tool is in position as shown in Fig. 5 the hand operating member 29 is rotated on the screw 27 and as the hub or nut portion 30 of the same bears against the upper end of the cross-head 37 and the rear of said pres sure arm is securely pivoted in the hole 41 by the pin 42 the front end of said pressure member will be lowered and will press the movable rim Z) downward thus carrying with it one side of the tire 0 so that the aerated composition within the same will be compressed and sufiicient room allowed to drop the locking ring cZ into position whereupon the operating member 29 will be rotated to release the pressure inserted by the pressure tool 45 and pressure arm 31 so that the tire c and rim 6 will spring back into their proper positions.
As shown in Fig. 1 each one of the jacks is operated separately and the pressure is evenly distributed by turning each of the operating members 29 a small distance, and then repeating this operation in order to press all parts of the tire downward a sulficient and uniform amount.
Although in Fig. 1 1 have shown six jacks as being applied to the tire to force the parts into position a greater or lesser number may be used as found most convenient and effective.
Various modifications and changes in the design, construction and operation of my improved jack as well as the size and shape of the tools employed may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A jack comprising a bed plate, a pressure arm longitudinally adjustable thereon and pivoted at its rear end, and an operating member above said arm cooperating with means on said bed plate for forcing the front end of said arm downward to exert the required pressure.
2. A jack comprising a bed plate, a pressure arm longitudinally adjustable thereon and pivoted at its rear end, and an operating member above said arm coiiperating front end of said arm downward to exertthe required pressure.
l. A jack comprising a bed plate, a pressure arm above the same having its rear end pivotally and adjustably connected to a pair of bars, said bars being pivotally mounted on a longitudinally adjustable member on said bed plate, and an operating member above said arm cotiperating with means on said bed plate for forcing the front end of said arm downward to exert the required pressure.
5. A jack comprising a bed plate, a pressure arm above the same having its rear end pivotally and adjustably connected to a pair of bars, said bars being pivotally mounted 011 a longitudinally adjustable member on said bed plate, and an operating member above said arm coiiperating with a screw pivoted on said bed plate for forcing the front end of said arm downward to exert the required pressure.
6. A jack comprising a bed plate, a pressure arm above the same having its rear end pivotally and adjustably connected to a pair of bars, said bars being mounted on a sliding bearing on said bed plate, and means for forcing the front end of said arm downward to exert the required pressure.
7. A jack comprising a bed plate, a pressure arm above the same having its rear end pivotally and adjustably connected to a pair of bars, said bars being mounted on a sliding bearing on said bed plate, and an operating member above said arm cooperating with means on said bed plate for forcing the front end of said arm downward to exert the required pressure.
8. A jack comprising a bed plate, a pressure arm above the same having its rear end pivotally and adjustably connected to a pair of bars, said bars being mounted on a sliding bearing on said bed plate, and an operating member above said arm cooperating with a screw pivoted on said bed plate for forcing the front end of said arm downward to exert the required pressure.
