Description

E. R. COLLINS.
EMBOSSING PRESS.
APPLIOATION FILED APR.2,1910.
Patented Nov. 7, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND R. COLLINS, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO NEW YORK DIE COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
EMBOSSING-PRESS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND R. COLLINS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Queens, city of New York, county of Queens, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Embossing-Presses, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for adj usting the platen or moving part of presses, particularly that class of presses used for embossing purposes and in which the platen or moving part is actuated by toggle levers arranged beneath and connecting it to the base of the frame provided with vertical guide-ways in which it is fitted to slide.
The adjusting means of this invention is located between the lower bearing of the toggle system and the base of the frame and is of a character to provide for the vertical adjustment of the platen or moving part through a considerable range of motion, and
comprises a screw seated in a threaded hole formed vertically in or through the base of the frame and on or in which is seated the said lower bearing of the toggle system, as will now be more particularly referred to by reference had to the accompanying draw ings, in which Figure 1 represents a front elevation of a press provided with the improved adjustment, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 2, 2, Fig. 1.
The frame a may be of any suitable form and construction; it is provided with vertical guide-ways 5, by which the platen c, by a flange downwardly extending from it, or from a frame (Z on which the platen rests, is slidably held, and to the upper part of the frame is secured the bed 6 which carries the die or embossing device The platen 0 is controlled by a toggle or kneejoint system of levers g, h, the upper end of the member 9 being pivotally connected to the platen carrier (Z and the lower end of the member h pivotally held in a vertical plane with the platen carrier connection of g. The central joint of the toggle is by a linkt Specification of Letters Patent.

connected to a crank j secured to one end of a shaft fitted in a bearing 70 of the frame a, and to the other end of this shaft is secured a handle Z, which when moved downwardly causes the toggle levers g and h to straighten and so presses any material placed on the platen 0 against the die f.
No claim is here made to any part of the press so far briefly described; the invention rests on the means for setting the platen in different vertical positions, comprising a large flat headed screw on having a central bore and fitting in a threaded hole vertically centrally formed in the base of the frame, a plate or disk a seated on the top of the head of the screw on and provided with ears to which the lower ends of the lever h are pivoted and with a stem 0 fitting into the bore of the screw m, a washer 7) held on the end of the stem 0 by any suitable means, as a screw 9, in such manner that while the screw m is free to rotate around the stem there is no end-play between these parts so the lower pivotal bearing of the toggle system is fully controlled by the screw m.
It is desirable in presses of the character here specified to provide considerable adjustment between the platen and the bed to accommodate dies and other devices, used in the presses, varying considerably in depth or thickness, and the screw adjustment here shown is particularly adapted to meet such requirements by carrying and controlling the lower jointed end of the platen actuating device, which may be a toggle lever system, as here described, or other suitable means for moving the platen toward the bed of the press.
I claim A press of the character specified, comprising a vertically moving platen, a frame having a base with a vertical screw-threaded hole, toggle-levers located between the platen and the base of the press, a bearing for the lower joint of the toggle-levers, means for operating the toggle-levers, and a screw fitted in the vertically threaded hole in the base of the press having an upper head or flange on which is seated the lower bearing In testimony whereof, I have hereunto of the toggle-lever, said screw having a censubscribed my name this 29th day of March, tral bore in which fits a stem downwardly 1910.
projecting from the lower bearing of the EDMUND R. COLLINS. togg1e-1evers, and a washer connected to the Witnesses:
stem and seated against the lower end of the J. C. MoKIBBIN,
screw. JAMES A. HUDSON.
