Be it known that l, RAPHAEL H. VVOLFF, a citizen of the United States, residing at. New York. in the county of N ew York and State of New York, have` invented new and useful Improvements in J ars or Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.

rlhis invention relates to a jar or receptacle adapted to contain various articles. By this invention the cover can be held on the receptacle or vessel secure against accidental displacement and so as to form an air tight closure.

This invention is set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawing` in which Figure l is a vertical central section of a jar or vessel embodying this invention and provided with a cover. In this drawing is shown a jar or vessel a of suitable material' such as glass, earthen ware, metal or other suitable material. The vessel about its upper part below the mouth has a recess An elastic band c is seated in the recess portion. A cover d is seated over the mouth to close the latter. The cover can be of suitable material the same as the vessel or of any other kind.

The elastic or rubber ringl e allows the cover to slide easily into place and makes an air tight closure.

rl`he rubber or elastic band is preferably reinforced or doubled at-the edgeportions, the doubled portions being spaced or recessed between the edge portions.

The jar or vessel can be of any shape in cross section such as circular7 square, polygonal or other form.

The closing of a receptacle by the above method by means of an elastic band having reinforced edges at the inner face of the elastic band, said edges being spaced or leaving an open portion between them gives a secure air tight closure when the l l l l l l l cover is titted into place. Said edges being broadened in the form of shoes or tlat faces `hold the tightening elastic ring or gasket immovable or secure in the seat or recess in the jar. At the center or middle Zone of the ring there is formed a sortof air or suction chamber which enables the ring or gasket to secure a firm or fixed seat or hold about the jar or about the seat or the ring in the jar.

A receptacle of suitable material having a recess at its upper part below the mouth to form a seating groove combined with an elastic ring adapted to seat itself in the groove, said ring having itsv edges doubled and spaced to be open in the direction toward the receptacle so as to give the ring a hollow shape in cross section to form an air tight closure. l

A receptacle of suitable material having a recess about its upper portion below the mouth, an elastic band seated in the recessed portion and a cover adapted to engage the elastic to close the receptacle air tight, said band being doubled about its edge portionsl and the doubled portions being spaced between their edge portions, said doubled edge portions being made to actas shoes to hold the ringl tirmly seated in position in the recess.
