To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that l, NELLIE HAILER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Slatington, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and usef'ul Improvements in Closures for Fruit- J ars, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closures for :fruit jars or like receptacles.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a closure for fruit jars and similar receptacles in which a clamp for holding a closing cap in contact with a packing bearing on the neck of the receptacle is formed from a pair of resilient clamp sections so shaped and connected as te permit independent adjustment of the clamp sections to more firmly engage the cap with the packing.
The invention consists in the improved construction7 novel arrangement and combination of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, but no restriction is necessarily made to the precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations and modifications within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.

The numeral 1 designates a fruit jar of ordinary well known type having an upstanding annular neck 2 provided with the usual threads 3.
A disk Aor closure member 4 for insertion within the neck 2 and having a diameter slightly less than the inside diameter of the neck 2 is provided in its periphery with a circumferentially extending groove 5 having an inclined wall 5 and a straight wall 5, said groove providing the disk at one end with a laterally extending flange 6 serving as a seat for a packing 7 arranged within said groove and adapted to engage the inner wall of the neck and to bear upon the rim thereof to support` the disk or closure member within the neck of the receptacle. The edge at the inner end of the disk, or closure member 4 is rounded to provide a bead 9 engaging the packing 7 above the neck of the receptacle. One end 11 of the disk or closure member 4 has formed therein a recess 12 to permit a clamping member 13 to engage with the neck of the liar to bear on the bead 9 and hold the same firmly engaged with the packing 7.
The clamping member 13 comprises a pair of clamp sections 13 and 13, each formed from a strip of resilient material bent between its ends to form a V-shaped body portion and to extend within said recess to provide a handle by means of which said receptacle may be lifted, said strips being twisted intermediate their end to form interengaging eyes 14, whereby the clamp `sections are hingedly connected and independently movable circumferentially about the closure member 4. The ends of the clamp sections 13 and 13 are bent to form fingers 15 of unequal lengths, that is to say, the finger 16 of the clamp section 13 is of greater length than the finger 17 of the clamp section 13, so that these fingers when engaged with the threads 3 upon the neck 2 of the jar or receptacle will maintain the closure member 4 in a sealed position.
From the foregoing'description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing it will be clearly seen that when the closure member 4 is inserted within the neck 2 of the jar or receptacle 1, the packing or gasket 7 is seated upon the mouth of the jar by the bead 9 on the closure member and an effectual stopper is provided. By the insertion of the closure member 4 within the neck of the jar the fruit therein may be forced down into the liquid surrounding the same and the liquid brought fiush with the bottom of' the closure member 4 while the liquid is in a heated condition.
TWhen the clamping member 13 is engaged with the threads 3 upon the jar 1 the bead forces the gasket 7 against the mouth of the jar, and through this action the gasket 7 is spread out into the recess 6 thereby wedging the closure 4 more tightly within the mouth 2 of the receptacle 1..
Upon the cooling of the contents of the jar the vacuum formed therein between the bottom of the closure 4 and the contents of the jar allows the atmospheric pressure upon the closure 4 to force the same still farther within the neck oit' the jar, thereby causing the liquid held by capillary attraction at the point of Contact of the flange 5 with the neck 2 to expand and hermetically seal the jar so that the leakage of air into the receptacle is prevented.
. Vhen the clamping member 13 has been applied to the neck of the receptacle to retain the closure member therein, it will be seen with reference to Fig. 2 in the drawing that either clamp section may be moved circumferentially about the closure member and neck of the receptacle to cause the iingers on the section through their engagement with the threads on the neck of the receptacle to force the closure member more deeply within the neck, thus insuring the packing 8 forming an air-tight joint between the neck of the receptacle and the closure member.

In a device of the class described, a receptacle having a neck, a closure member slightly less in diameter than the inside diameter of the neck and extending therein, said closure member having a circumferentially extending groove in its periphery providing the closure member at one end with a laterally extending iange, a packing in said groove engaging said flange and the neck of the receptacle to support said closure lnember therein, and a bead at the other end of the closure member engaging said packing above the neck of the receptacle.
