TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1909.
Application led March 6, 1909. Serial No. 481,666.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, PEPE PHILLIPS, CnEsoENZIo DIPIERNO, and STEVE MONGELL, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Newhaven, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to toys, and the invention has for its object to provide a novel toy that will be simple and durable in construction, and highly eflicient for affording amusement to juveniles.
A further object of this invention is to provide a toy that will resemble a miniature stage or theater upon which burlesque or grotesque figures are made to dance and perform by mechanism located beneath the stage.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a device for attracting attention which can be operated by electricity or similar source of energy and used for advertising various articles and merchandise.
Vith the above and other objects in view which will more readily appear as the invcntion is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the toy. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same partly broken away and partly in section. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the toy, and Fig. a is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the actuating mechanism for the figures of the toy.
To put our invention into practice, we provide a box, casing or cabinet 1 with a horizontal floor or partition 2, and between the bottom 3 of the box andsaid partition we locate a housing t in which is ournaled a winding arbor 5, having the rear inner end thereof provided with a crank G, while the outer end extends in proximity to the rear wall 7 of the box 1 and is rectangular, as at 8, to receive a winding key 9 adapted to extend through an opening 10 in the front wall 7 of the box 1. Attached to the winding arbor 5 is a spiral spring 11 having the outer end thereof fixed, as at 12, to the housing at, the unwinding action of said spring being controlled by a conventional form of ratchet mechanism 13 located in the housing 1, said ratchet mechanism being of the ordinary and well known type commonly used in the art of horology.
The horizontal partition 2 is provided with a central vertical opening 14; for a plunger 15 having t-he lower end thereof connected by a pitman to the crank 6. Secured to the upper end of the plunger 15 is a horizontal platform or stage plate 17. Located between the platform 17 and the top 1S of the box 1 are two burlesque figures 19 having pivoted legs and arms, said figures being connected to the top 18 of the box by elastics 2O and to the platform 17 by coil springs 21, the upper ends of said springs constituting supports for the burlesque iigures 19.
By using the key 9, the spring 11 can be placed under tension, whereby when the key is removed, the spring 11 will gradually unwind and revolve the winding arbor 5, which through the medium of the crank 6 and pitman 16 imparts a reciprocatory movement to the plunger 15. Such a movement of the plunger 15 imparts a jarring movement to the burlesque figures 19, causing said gures to oscillate and move, similar to two persons dancing a The front of the box 1 inclosing the spring housing can be used for advertisement purposes, and a small motor can be located in the lower part of the box to continuously operate the pitman 1G vshould it be desired to use the device for advertisement purposes.
lt will be observed that our toy comprises a box having a compartment formed in the lower part thereof, while the upper part of the front wall of the box is removed to cxpose the movable figures arranged upon the platform within said box.
lVhile in the drawings forming a part of this application there is illustrated the preferred embodiments of our invention, we would have it understood that the detail construction thereof can be 'varied or changed to shape, proportion and manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having now described our invention what we claim as new, is z- A toy of the type described, comprising a box having one half of the front wall thereof open, a horizontal partition located in said box and providing said box with a eolnpartnecting the heads of said figures to the top nient, a housing located in the Compartment oi said box, and springs Carried by said platof said box, a Winding arbor journaled in forms for inovably supporting said gures. said housing, a Spiral spring attached to said In testimony whereof We ailix our signa Winding arbor and to said housing, a Crank tures in the presence of two witnesses.
Carried by said winding arbor, a vertical PEPE PHILLIPS. plunger loosely mounted in said partition, a l CRESCENZIO DIPIERNO. pitman connecting' said crank with said l STEVE MONGELL. plunger, a platform carried by said plunger Titliessesz above said partition, joint-ed figures ar- I WILLIAM SHRUNN,
