ADVERTISING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AROHIBALD A. DU 1301s, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a novel advertising device (or toy) in which are provided movable figures or objects and actuating mechanism therefor, the Whole being so constructed and organized that various pre determined motions or actions shall be imparted to said figures or objects when the device is bodily agitated.
The invention is especially, thoughnot exclusively, designed for use as an advertising medium in street-railway cars or omnibuses, the motion of which in traveling is sufiicient to actuate the device, and thus direct attention to the same and to the advertisement or display thereon or adjacent thereto.
The invention embodies a vertically-disposed spring fastened at its lower end portion and provided with a weight at its upper V portion, mechanism connected with and actuated by the same, and movable figures or objects operatively connected with said mechanism, together with various details of construction, all of which will be hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof with the back plate removed. Fig. 3 is a plan of the same.
A represents a box or casing of appropriate shape and size for its intended purpose. In this box or casing is arranged an elongated arm or lever B, one end of which is secured in place, while the other or free end carries a weight Z). This arm or lever is preferably a vertically-disposed fiat spring, the lower end of which is secured to the wall of the box, so that when the box is agitated the upper or weighted end of the arm will swing to and fro with considerable energy and this irrespective of the position or angle of the box. On the wall of the box are arranged two padded projections b'b, which serve as stops to limit during the vibration of the arm the pawl is reciprocated and the ratchet-wheel thereby moved step by step. The pawl preferably rests upon andis supported by a projection c on the box. On the inner side of the wheel are inwardly-projecting studs 0 in the path of which extends, a lever 0 which is f ulcrumed in the front wall of the box and connected with a movable object D on the exterior of the box. object is represented as the arm of a man, which at predetermined intervals is raised and lowered through the instrumentality of the leveras the latter is actuated by the impact thereaga-inst of the studs on the rotary wheel.
Connected also with the vibratory arm B is one end of a lever E, the other end of which, in turn, is connected, by means of a link c, with another movable object or objects on the exterior of the box. In the present instance a figure in semblance of a large cockroach is illustrated as located in proximity to the figure of the man, the legs of which cockroach comprise movable pieces F, pivoted to the body portion, as at f. These pieces are connected in the rear by flexible connections f and the whole in turn connected with the link 6, whereby during the vibration of the weighted arm B the lever E is rocked and the legs of the cockroach are simultaneously vibrated, the device being illustrative of a In the present instance this running cockroach with a man in pursuit wielding an ax.
It will be obvious that other movable figures or objects than those above described may be employed to meet particular requirements and that various appropriate movements may be imparted thereto from suitable mechanism under the control of the weighted arm or lever.
It will be readily seen that a vertically-disposed spring-arm fastened at its lower end portion and weighted at its upper portion is very sensitive to vibrations and that a comparatively slight vibration is suflicient to cause a considerable movement thereof, since as soon as this initial vibration moves the weight to one side of the center the gravity of the weight tends to increase the length of movement. Moreover, the resulting vibrations are of more deliberate character and better suited to the display of advertisements or advertising figures than the quicker and shorter movements which would be caused by a pendulum-like arm pivoted at its upper end and weighted at its lower end.
I claim 1. The combination with a support, of a vertically-disposed spring fastened in place at its lower end and provided with a weight at its upper end, a movable object, and a connection between the same and the spring.
2. The combination with a support, of a vertically-disposed flat spring fastened in place at its lower end, and provided with a weight at its upper end, a movable object, and a connection between the same and the spring.
3. The combination with a support, of a vertically-positioned vibratory spring-lever weighted at its upper free end portion, powertransmitting mechanism operatively connected therewith, lateral stops for said lever, and a movable object or objects connected with said mechanism.
4. The combination with asupport, of a flat vertical spring secured in place at its lower end and provided with a weight at its upper end, power-transmitting mechanism operatively connected with said spring, and a movable object or figure connected with said mechanism.
5. The combination with a support, of a weighted vibratory lever, a ratchet-wheel, its arbor, a pawl connected to said lever and engaged with the ratchet-wheel, lateral studs on said wheel, a lever extending into the path of said studs, and a movable object or figure connected with the last-named lever.
6. The combination with a support, of a flat vertically-disposed spring secured in place at its lower end and provided with a weight at its upper end, a lever connected with said spring and a movable object or objects connected with said lever.
7. The combination with a support, of a weighted vibratory lever, a series of movable objects, a common flexible connection, and
with the weighted lever, a ratchet-wheel, a pawl engaged therewith, and connected with said weighted lever, a movable object or objects, and connections between said wheel and the weighted lever.
8. The combination with a support, of a weighted vibratory lever, a movable object, a lever connected to said object and engaging said vibratory lever, a ratchet-wheel upon the opposite side of said lover, a pawl engag ing the teeth of said wheel and operatively connected to said vibratory lever, said wheel having lateral studs, a lever having an arm in position to be engaged by said studs, and a movable device or object connected to said last-named lever.
9. Ina device of the class described, the combination of a vertically-disposed spring fastened at its lower end portion, and weighted at its upper portion, a movable object or objects upon each side of the said spring, the object or objects upon one side thereof being independent of those upon the opposite side, and power and motion transmitting devices between the said spring and the said movable objects, whereby said objects are moved by the vibratory movements of the spring and the movements of the objects upon opposite sides of the spring are timed with respect to each other.
10. In a device of the class described, the combination of a vertically-disposed spring fastened at its lower end and provided with a weight at its upper end, a movable object upon one side of said spring, a connection between the said object and the said spring, a ratchet-wheel upon the opposite side of said spring, a pawl engaging the teeth of said wheel, and operatively connected to said spring, another movable device or object, and a connection between the same, and the said wheel, whereby the movement of the latter causes a movement of the said device or object.
