Description

R. T. KANSKI.
STAIR TREAD.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 2z, 1909 ,6l/wimax@ I (g4/wm Patented Dec. 14, 1909.
ROMAN fr. "Kansai, .or New Yoim. N;
A Y j ,writ-ALL, O FRIDGEFELD PARK, NEW JERSEY.
To alt/whom# may concern.'l Q
Be it knownthat I, ROMAN TKANSKI, a citizen of the United 'States, residing atk New York, in the county of New York and State ofNew York, have invented certainnew and useful Improvements in" VStair-."freads, of which the' following 'is a specification.
This'invention relates to 'stair treads, morev particularly, tocoverings for-'the steps of exposed' places, and to. become slippery from stairways situated -in liable, therefore, deposits' of rain; or snow and ice.' Such coverings are inn'iany instances. devised and constructed/to preyentvthe feet from slips ping, and it is with that type offstair 'treads' that fthis invention belongs.
The 1object of thisiiivention is the producl l' ltion of a staiiztread made in longitudinal divisions, separately fasteneddown, ,andre-f 2o having. special construction and arrangen'ient movable separately, and it comprises `partsbelieved to be particularly effective, and moreweasilyapplied, removed, and manufactured-'than others of like saine purpose.
Theconstruction and arrangement consti-v tuting. this invention is illustrated in the-ac-g companying drawings, of which- 4 Figure l represents a plan view of a step provided with this invention. Fig. 2 is a sect-ion showing a wooden stepxwith this invention, inA section, applied thereto. Fig. .3.
is a sect-ion of a concrete step with this invention shown in section and applied thereto.
. Throughout the description and drawings,
l the saine 'letterris vused to refer to the same pi-oxiinately the saine angle but toward each part .Considering the drawings, the letter marks a stair surface, on which are placed a number of channel strips B having a certain special construction as below set forth.
One side edgeA of the stri B is bent upwardly and inclined inward y, and is designated by theletter C. A portion of the o posite side ofthe strip is -folded upon itse f inwardly as illustrated, and marked D. The
edge of the inwardly-folded portion of the strip is turned upwardly and will be referred to by means ofthe letter E. The upwardly-turned edges ,C and E slant at apother, thus 'forming a dovetailed channel -between them, into which fits the anti-slipping .rods of material which is not ordinarily of a smin- Specicationioflettrs Patent.
`nature for 'the metallic:n ature.v Most usually the rods or bars F i are of yielding substance, such as compositions containing `fabric 'and rubber.
pass a number of 'screws (l by which they are secured to the step. tomary not I to f countersink screws d, but to permit them to the surface of the folded portion of the strip. They are thus 'most easily reached.v The heads of the screws aie-usually covered by'a cement filling G thel` step `is ot-iron` machine screws H usedin place ofthe wood screws ZZ. Vhen it is desiredA to apply this invention are positions, or. of natural stone, the preferred construction is that illustrated in Fig. 3. )L
steelplate I issunkl into the material of the Through the folded portions of the strips' In practice it is cus-v the head/s. ofY proj ect above e to steps'formed fof concrete or cement com-V rica.A i f which occupies the space f between the anti-slipping rods F. lV here Y concrete step a, and is secured thereto bv suitable screws-K. `The metal strips B containing the -anti-slipping rods F applied A,to the-*plate J by means of .the screws H in the same manner as ypreviously described', the cement 'filling G `protecting the exposed screw l., In Fig. vl a portion of the cement ifling G is broken awayto showthe customary poi sitionsof the screw heads d.
to be now clear that in order to reach the replace any l remove the screw heads and remove and. st-riph B, it is only necessary to cement G at the heads are reached.
Having now described lthis invention, and explained the nature of its use, what- I claim/ is zt 1. A stair tread, comprising strips ai ranged side by side', leach strip one edge turned upwardly, and each strip having a portion folded 'inwardly upon itself andfhaving an edge of the said folded poi:- tion turned upwardl forming, with the said upwardly-turned ege first mentionedf a channel lengthwise-of the strip, and means f for securing the said folded portion of the strip to a step.
2. A. stair tread, comprising strips arl' ranged side by. side, each strip having van are i then heads as also explained.
It is believed places known, and the screw sof edge turned upwardly and inclinedfin` 4 'edge first 1nentioned,'a.channel lengthwise of the stri 'means'for securing the said folded portlonof vthe'strip to a step, and a cement filling loeatedbetween the .said up- 5 "wardlg turned' edges -of the. strip.
stair' tread, comprising strips. ar-
portion ofthe strip to a v4. A. stair tread, eomprlsl p 'g strips arrangedside by side, eaeh strip having anF 22o' edge turned upwardly and inclined inv tardly, and eaeh'strip having a portion folded inwardly upon itself, the edge of the said foldedrportion being turnedxlrmvardly forming, with -said upwardly-turned edge upon the said plate edge l turned upwardl in presence of two witnesses.
. ROMAN T. KANSKL Vllitnesses CYRIL DE'WYRALL, SAMUELG. Gentilini.
firstmentioned, a channel lengthwise of the strip', a rod of suitable material to prevent slipping-located in said channel', means for securing the said folded portion of the strip to a step, and. a cement filling Aarranged to cover the said folded portion of the strip. rangedside by side, 'each strip having one 5. The combination withV a eocrete'step. edge l. turned upwardly 1 and 'inclined inl andefa-ch strip having a portion 1'0' folde .inwardly upon itself, the edge of the .said folded portion being turned upwardly forming, with the said upwardly-turned edge .first mentioned, a channel lengthwise of the said strip, :1f-rod 0I suitable-material v'15 to prevent slipping located in. the said channel, and means forsecuring the'said folded having a plate seeuredflengthwise in its'v npp'er surface, of. strips arrangedside by side eaeh strip having an and 'each' strip hav-A inga portion folded inwardly upon itself, the 'edge of thesaid folded portion being l turned. upwardly forming, withsaid np.- lWardly-turned edge first mentioned, a channel lengthwise of the strip, and means for securing the said strips uponthe s'id plate.-
