JACOB GUSTAFSON, OF BOISE, IDAHO.
METALLIC NOSING FOR BLEFAIRING OLD STEPS.
Application filed November 4, 1916.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB GUSTAFSON, a citizen of Finland, residing at Boise, in the county of Ada and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Nosings for Repairing Old Steps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a metallic nosing designed for use in repairing old steps.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a metallic nosing that may be used in the reconstruction of old steps.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a metal nosing. that may be used in connection with the metal step covering in repairing old or worn steps.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of a metal nosing that may be used in the construction of new steps.
WVith these and other objects in view as will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described hereinafter and set forth with particularity in the appended claim.
Referring to the drawings,
The figure is a vertical sectional view of a portion of a reconstructed pair of steps.
Similar characters of reference are used to denote like parts throughout the accompanying drawings and the following description.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, and when it is desired touse my improved metallic nosing in the reconstruction of a pair of old worn wooden steps, it is necessary to remove the step boards and the riser boards from the stringers. After the step boards and riser boards have been removed, the stringers are cut away for a purpose which will presently appear. Tread form boards 5 are supported between the stringers by cleats 6 that are attached to the sides of the stringers. Riser form boards 7 extend upwardly and connect each pair, of tread form boards 5.
As shown in the figure the metal casing 8 is shown to be of substantially semi-circular Specification of Letters Patent.

construction in cross section and is provided at its upper edge with an inwardly extending rib 9, while the lower edge of the nosing is provided with downwardly and inwardly extending flanges 10 and 11 respectively. In order to support the nosing in position to form the nose of the reconstructed step, I employ supporting strips 12 that are secured upon the tread form boards 5 through the medium of screws or other suitable fastening devices 13. This supporting strip 12 projects outwardly of the step form and is curved upwardly as at 14 and detachably connected to the inner surface of the metal nosing by screws or other suitable fastening means 15.
The metal nosing having been arranged in position, a metal lathing 16 is arranged over the step form and upon this metal lathing is arranged cement or other suitable material which is filled into the step form so as to provide treads 17 and risers 18. If desired tile or marble inserts may be positioned within the treads 17.
From this construction it will be apparent that a new cement step may be formed and reconstructed out of an old pair of wooden steps. It is also to be noted that by reason of the fact that the metal nosing is detachably connected to the supporting strips 12 that when it becomes worn it can readily be detached and replaced with a new piece of nosing. This nosing if desired may be extended simply across the ends of the step or it may be extended around either one or both ends of the steps.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that I have provided a new and novel use of metal nosing, whereby old and worn steps of either cement or wood may be quickly and readily repaired so as to provide a new nosing therefor, and by this nosing being detachably connected, it can be readily replaced by a new nosing when this one becomes worn. It is also to be noted that the nosing can be used effectively as well in new step construction as in old.
What I claim is:
In a step construction, a metal nosing hav-' the tread and riser, a plurality of supporting In testimony whereof I have signed my arms having upwardly curved outer ends, name to this specification in the presence of means for attaching the inner ends of said two subscribing Witnesses.
arms to the tread form board, and means JACOB GUSTAFSON. for detachably connecting said semi-circular Witnesses:
portion of the nosing to the upwardly curved S. W. COGKRELL,
ends of said supporting arms. FRANK B. HOFFMAN.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents. Washington, D. C.
