To all whom 'it may concern:

Be it lrnown that l, WALTER K. VVoLr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brownstown, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a cer tain new and useful Improvement in Loss- Preventing Devices, of which the following is a speciiication.

My invention relates to a new and useful improvement in hat pins, and has Yfor its object to provide an exceedingly simple, and eliective device of this character, whereby `a hat pin may be provided with a safety hold.- ing device in the form of'an ornament.

A. further object of my invention is to provide a device or thecharacter described in which a safety holding device is provided for the pointed end of the pin which may be readily placed thereon or removed therefrom.

Viith these ends in View, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

In practice the hat pin is placed in thef hat and the safety device is placed on the end of the pin, and by pushing it along said pin, said pin will first enter the conical opening F then the hole G and finally the hole H in the7 clutch l, and as. soon as the safety device is let go ot, the spring M will cause the clutch l to move out of a vertical line, thus causingthe clutch or grip l to take hold'of the pin at two points, which 'will prevent the safety device rombeing removed, until the upper leaf 0 is. pressed downward, at which time, because of the curved upper end N of the clutch or grip will cause said clutch to move to the vertical line, allowing the hat pin to be withdrawn.

One of the important features of my invention is that the safety device may be placed on the pin a suficient distance for the clutch to take hold of said pin, but at said distance the point of the vpin will not protrude from said safety device, thus preventing the pin from coming in contact with a person, which would possibly injure said person. Another feature is, that various designs of se fety devices may he .used with a single pin, so that the user may use the device Widi diter'ent ornaments, thus varying the appearance from time to time as may be desired.
