HENRY F. KELLEMEN, 0F UTICA, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO UTICA DROP FORGE & TOOL COMPANY, OF YORK'VILLE, NEW YORK.
PLIERS.
Application filed May 24, 1909.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY F. KELLEMEN, of Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pliers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
The object of my present invention is to provide an improved cutting and holding pliers, which is efficient and particularly well adapted to meet the requirements of such atool.
Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a tool embodying the features of my present improvements, with a section of wire in connection with the tool in the act of being severed. A portion of the handles of the tool are shown removed in order to reduce the size of the figure. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the tool as shown in Fig. 1 without the wire, however. Fig. 3 is a view looking into the throat of the pliers with the jaws in open position.
Referring to the reference letters and figures in a more particular description, A and B indicate the two crossing levers constituting the pliers comprising a pair of jaws 10 provided with overlapping, rearwardly extended portions 11 of reduced thickness, oppositely disposed with respect to said jaws, and terminating in operating handles or members 12. The overlapping portions 11 in the constructions shown constitute joint parts and are pivotally connected by a pivot pin 13. Each joint part is provided with a slot 14-, which is inclined with respect to the outer face of said part and extended into the space between the jaws when the aws are in open position. One wall 1 1 of this slot constitutes one member of the cutter, and the wall is inclined or overhanging, whereby an overhanging point 15 is secured. The other cutter member is found at 16 on the rear end of the aw part. The cooperat- Specification of Letters Patent.

ing cutting edges lt and 16 are therefore relatively inclined to form shearing members, and preferably as shown converge toward the outer face of the corresponding part or portion 11. The width of the inclined groove 14 limits the size of the wire or piece of material that can be introduced for the purpose of cutting.
On account of the overhanging of the point 15, the wire or piece of material is held from escaping laterally from between the cutting faces in the act of cutting, and, indeed, on account of the incline of the cutting wall or edge 14* the tendency is to crowd the wire or piece of material laterally inward. When the wire is severed, the one portion is at once grasped between the jaws, which is often of importance.
\Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In pliers, the combination of a pair of jaws provided with overlapping, rearwardly extended portions of reduced thickness and oppositely disposed with respect to said jaws, one of said overlapping portions having a slot extended into the space between said jaws when in open position, one of the forward edges of said slot and the inner end of the opposite jaw being relatively inclined and arranged to constitute a pair of cooperating cutting edges.
2. In pliers, the combination of a pair of jaws provided with overlapping, rearwardly extended portions of reduced thickness and oppositely disposed with respect to said jaws, one of said overlapping portions having a slot extended into the space between said jaws when in open position, one of the forward edges of said slot and the inner end of the opposite jaw being arranged to constitute a pair of cooperating cutting edges, said edges converging toward the outer face of said overlapping portion when said jaws are open.
3. In pliers, the combination of a pair of jaws provided with overlapping rearwardly extended portions of reduced thickness and oppositely disposed with respect to said jaws, one of said overlapping portions having a slot extended into the space between said jaws When in open position and inclined nature, in presence of two Witnesses, this With respect to the outer face of said portion 19th day of May, 1909. to form an overhanging Wall, the ,for vand end of said Wall and the inner-end of the NR E MEN- e. 5 opposite jaw being arranged to constitute a Witnesses:
pair of cooperating cutting edges. EMMA S. HEssE;
In Witness whereof, I have aflixed my sigj I SARAH E. CLARK.
