-' wnm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
W'ALTER G. COFFIN, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
WIRE-BREAKING TOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 717,735, dated January 6, 1903.
Application filed September 8 1902- Serial No. 12%458.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VALTER G. OOFFIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-B reaking Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in means for breaking or cutting the bindingwires of bales; and it consists particularly of a simple and convenient hand-tool for that purpose.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved device; and Fig. 2 is an inside view of the device, showin g method of use.
As shown in the drawings, the device consists of a handle portion A, provided with an inwardly-bent end 2. The end 2 is formed with a square head provided with a diagonal slot 3, constituting jaws 4 and 5.
When it is desired to break or cut the balewire 6, the device is held so that the wire will lie in the slot 3. By then turning the device,
as shown in Fig. 2, the inner edges of the (No model.)
jaws 4c and 5 will indent the wire, cutting the wire or weakening it, so that the pressure of the bale upon the wire will break it at the point of indentation. The device can be turned back and forth to sufficiently weaken or to cut the wire.
Having now described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A device of the class described, consisting of a handle portion provided with an inwardly-bent end and a square head upon said end, and a slot extending through said head from opposite corners, for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the class described, consisting of a handle provided with an inwardlyprojecting square portion, said square portion being formed with a diagonal slot, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WALTER G. COFFIN. Witnesses:
