Description

ILLINOIS.
Letters Patent No. 94,207, dated August 31, 1869.
IMPROVED SPRING-BED BOTTOM.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
invention may be distinguished from others of a similar class, together with such parts as we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent.
Our invention relates to spring-bed bottoms; and Our improvements-consist in certain modifications in the details of the same, whereby certain material advantages are obtained, to wit:
First, in securing the springs to the rail, by means ot'a fluked spike or hook-fastening.
Second, in the use of a combination of double righthanded and left-handed springs, which react upon each other in such a way as to cause the spring-bed bottom to assume and maintain a homogeneous and level form.
Third, in a matter of widening or narrowing the springs, in order to adapt the same to any width of bedstead.
In the annexed plate of drawings, which form a part of this specification- Figure 1 is a top view, showing the combination and convolution of a series of 'righthanded and left-handed springs, and. the method of securing the same to the rail.
Figure 2 is an end view of the bed-bottom, showing the slotted bars whereby the same is widened or narrowed.
Figure 3 is a sectional side view, showing the mannor of supporting the inner rails by a secondary series ofright-handed and left-handed springs.
Figure 4 is a detached section, showing more distinctly than in the figures aibrcsaid the fluked springfastening.
Much ditiiculty has heretofore been experienced by the uncoiling of springs, from want of proper fasten- We propose to obviate thisvdiificulty by means of the fluked bolt A. The end of the same is bent in an oval form, and secured firmly by the vertical and lateral pressure of the flukes A.
The said bolt may be either screwed to the rail 0, or secured by any other method which we may prefer to make use of. 7
In order to cause the bed-bottom to remain square and even after being introduced into use, we arrange alternately upon the top rails c, a row, D and E, of right-handed andleft-hauded coiled springs, which are secured to thcsaid rairs by the fluked bolt, in the manner aforesaid.
It will be seen that no couple of the said springs can be-made to assume a homogeneous position, and that the forces of torsion exerted by the'said springs are reactive, thereby creating an equilibrium of forces, which keeps the whole series of springs forming the bed-bottom even and square.
In order to adapt the bed-bottom to any size of bedstead, we a-vail ourselves of the slotted bar H, travel ling upon the stud-bolt K. Their position, when extended, is indicated by the dotted lines.
7 Hating thus described our invention, we will designate what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent in the following clauses:
1.. The fluked bolt A, when used for the purpose of fastening bed-springs as described herein.
2. The double right-handed and double left-handed springs, when cpmbined and arranged as herein set forth.
3. The slotted bar H, in combination with the spring-bed bottom herein described.
