To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN F. GINDLE- srnnonn, citizen of the United States, residing at Garrett, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window- Shade llangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window shade hangers and has for an object to provide a hanger that can be connected in a novel and simple manner to the ordinary form of window frame, and which will embody means for adjusting the shade vertically so as to move the roller toward or away from the top of the frame and to permit of the lowering of the upper window sash, thus permitting the entrance of air into a room at a point above the shade and also permitting the light to enter the room and thrown at a point toward the ceiling.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a shade of the character set forth with simple and novel means for holding it in its adjusted position.

In the drawings, forming a portion of the specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a front elevation of portion of a window frame showing the application of my improved shade hanger thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail horizontal section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1. In the drawings is illustrated the wellknown form of window frame A having, as illustrated, the vertically spaced frame members B and C connected to each other at their upper ends by a horizontal member D. The member B is provided at suitable points with horizontally disposed brackets 1 which are preferably of U-form as shown in Fig. 3 and provide a base portion 2 with which and with the member B of the frame is engaged. a fastening screw or similar device 3. The base portion 2 carries spaced vertical side portions 1 having concaved outer edges 5 which receive the vertical rails 6 of a mem her 7. The member 7 is preferably formed from a single length of suitable gage wire and the rails 6 which are disposed in spaced relation to each other are connected at their lower ends by a portion 7 and at their upper ends by a similar portion 8. The portion 8 extends outwardly beyond the rails (l for a suitable distance and is provided with an intermediate depression 9. A frame 10 is carried by the member 7 and is provided with spaced revolu'ble rollers or pulleys 11 provided with grooved peripheral edges which conform in contour to the curvature of the rails (S and are thus adapted to travel thereon in a vertical plane. The frame 10 carries at its upper extremity an eye member 13 for a purpose to be hereinafter more fully explained.
The member C of the frame A is provided with a series of brackets lt which are similar to the brackets 1 and are provided with parallel spaced vertical side portions 15 provided with concaved outer portions 16 for receiving the vertical rails 17 of a member 18. The member 18 is formed from a single length of wire, preferably, and the rail portions 17 thereof are connected to each other at their lower ends by a horizontal portion 19 and at their upper ends by a similar portion 20. The portion 20 is slightly offset from the remaining portion of the frame and is provided with a centrally located depres sion 21. A sliding element 22 is carried by the member 18 and is preferably constructed from sheet metal stamped to form parallel spaced side walls; 23 and 24 and grooved end walls 25. The grooves in the end walls are arranged to receive the vertical rails 17 in order that the element 22 is free to slide in a vertical plane. The element 22 has secured thereto at its upper end an eye member 26 similar to the member 13 upon the frame 10.
To complete my improved shade hanger I employ a flexible connection 27 which has portions disposed in guide eyes 28 carried by the member D of the frame A, and, as illustrated, portions of said connection are guided in their movement in the depressions 9 and 21 of the portions 8 and 20 of the members 7 and 18, and the terminal ends of said connections are connected in a suitable manner to the eye members 13 and 26 as clearly shown. 'if he construction of the member 27 is such that the same is formed with a looped portion 29 from which is suspended a counter balancing weight 30. The frame 10 is provided with a passage 31 for receiving the pintle at the spring end of the shade roller 32, and the element 22 has its wall 23 provided with a passage for receiving the other pintle of the roller. As shown in Fig. l, the shade is of usual form and may be secured. in the customary manner to the roller, but I do not desire to limit myself to the particular construction of shade and roll as any suitable type may be employed wherein is provided means for engagementwith the frame 10 and the element 22.
in operation of the device hereinafter disclosed, the sash E may be lowered as shown in Fig. 2 and the shade 33 operated or pulled downwardly so that the roller 32 is disposed in the desired spaced relation to the upper portion of the frame to permit the entrance of the desired quantity of air and light. After the shade has been moved into the desired position it will be automatically held so incident to the provision of the counter balancing weight 30. The rails 6 and 17 of the members 7' and 18 are disposed in parallel spaced relation to the members B and C of the frame A so as to permit free vertical movement of the frame 10 and the element 22.
The hanger is extremely simple in construction, may be applied to window frames of ordinary form,- and provides means per mitting the sashes of the frame and the shade to be operated in such manner as to permit of a perfect ventilation as will be fully appreciated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is in a device of the character described, a window fame provided at one side with spaced rails, a vertically sliding shade supporting bracket disposed between the rails and provided with rail engaging rollers, vertically disposed spaced rails at the other side of the said frame, a shade supporting element disposed between the last named rails and provided at its sides with rail receiving grooves, the said first named rails being connected to each other at their upper extremities by an offset portion having a de pression formed therein, the second named rails being connected to each other at their upper extremities by a portion having a depression formed therein, guides carried by the frame and disposed in line with the dcpressions formed in the connecting portions of the said rails, a flexible connection. having end portions engaged with the said vertically sliding bracket and with the said element, said connection being slidably engaged in the depressions and in the said guides respectively and provided with an intermediate depending looped portion, and a counter-balancing weight carried by the said looped portion.
