Description

No. 868,527. PATENTED OCT. 15, 1907. W. F. BROWN.
WINDOW SHADE HANGER.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 9. 1907. v
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WINDOW-SHADE HANG-ER.
Specifieation of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 15, 1907.
Application filed May 9,1907. Serial No. 372,792.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that WILLIAM F. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goldthwaite, in the county of Mills and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Shade Hangers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Hy invention is an improved window shade hanger,
adjustable to lit shade rollers of various lengths, and so constructed and combined with hoisting devices as to enable the shade to be raised or lowered from the top of the window at will, as well as to be raised or lowered from the bottom thereof, so that light and air may be caused to enter either from above or below the shade, and my invention consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,Figure l is an elevation of a shade hanger embodying my invention, showing the same attached to a window, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, taken on the plane inclicated by the line a-o of Fig. l.
My improved shade hanger comprises the side members 1 and the connecting member 2. Each of the side members comprises a vertical outer arm 3 and a horizontal, inwardly-extending arm 4 at the lower end of said vertical arm. Said horizontal arms are provided with laterally extending members having alining openings therein and preferably formed by depressed inner portions, offset, as at 5, to provide shoulders 6 having openings for the reception of the adjusting member 2, which preferably is a rod. The side members are thus slidably connected to the adjusting member 2, which serves to connect them together and enable said side members to be adjusted toward and from each other, so that the length of the shade hanger may be varied to correspond with the length of the roller a, to which the shade b is attached. By the provision of the offsets 5, and the shoulders 6, through which the adjusting and connecting rod 2 extends, said rod and the horizontal arms of the side members brace each other and render the shade hanger extremely strong, while also enabling it to be very light.
It will be understood that the side members may be made of sheet metal at very slight expense, so that the shade hanger may be very cheaply produced.
The vertical arms 3 of the side members are provided with bearing openings for the journals of the shade roller. The shade roller is of the usual construction, and is preferably provided with an interior spring to enable the shade to be raised and lowered.
At the upper corners of the window frame, I provide brackets 7 each of which supports a peripherallygrooved roller or pulley 8. Cords 9 pass over said pulleys, and one end of each of said cords is attached to the upper end of one of the arms 3 of the said members. The other ends of the cords are united, and the said cords may be fastened to the Window frame by a button or other suitable device 10.
It will be understood that by means of the cords and pulleys, the shade hanger which carries the shade and its roller may be raised and lowered, and that the cord may be fastened by the button to support the hanger and hence the upper end of the shade at any desired adjustment. 1
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood Without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, as defined by the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is,
1. A shade hanger of the class described comprising side members. each having a vertical arm and a lower, in wardly-extending. horizontal arm, said horizontal arms having offset portions providing shoulders and said shoulders having openings extending therethrough, and :1 connecting rod passed through the said openings of the shoulders and adjustably connecting said side members together, substantially as described.
2. A shade hanger of the class described comprising side members each having a vertical arm and a lower inwardly extending horizontal arm, said horizontal arms being pro vidcd with laterally extending members having alining openings formed therein and a connecting rod passed through said openings and adjustably connecting' said membersv In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
