Description

ditemi gieten @anni @with Letters Patent No. 94,183, dated August 31, 1869.
Thei Schedule referred t in these Letters Patent and making part oi' the same.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Beit known that I, J ORN B. CARTER, of Hartsville, in the county of Bartholomew, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Buttons; and that the following is'afull and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this specification. e
My improved button is designed especially for fastening cuis, collars, and cravats.
The'piincipal vpeeuliarity in the invention consists in forming the neck of' the button to tit and till the button-hole with which it is intended to be used, and with a conical head of approximately similar form, but slightly longer, the extremities of the head project-ing slightly so as to form shoulders, over which the button-hole may he stretched, when the button is inserted, but which wilLprevent its accidental escape.
vIn the drawings- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a culi-button, illustrating my invention.
Figure 2 is a plan viewof' the same, showing also a section of the cuii.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of a collar-button, of'
similar construction.
Figure 4 is a plan view thereof, showing sections of the collar and shirt-band. Y
Similar letters ofv reference indicatel corresponding parts in the several views.
The neck N ofthe button is made of elliptical funn,
. and ot' a size to correspond with that which is usual in the button-holes of shirt-collars and cns.
The head H has, at its base, a form similar to lthat of the neck, but is of slightly greater size, and it converges to an apex-h, giving to the front of the button a conoidal or wedge-like form, so that the button-hole may be readily drawn or stretched over it;
' The longitudinal extremities of the head form shoulders or projections t' i, which eiectually secure the garment from escape or accidental dis-placement..
The cuff-button (iigs. l and 2) is provided with a iange, F, Ato protect the wrist of thewearer, and requires no shank.
D D represent parts of the cui?.
The collar-button (figs. 3 and 4) is made with a shank, S, to receive and hold the neck-band of the shirt in customary manner.
B B represent the neck-band of the shirt;
C C, the collar-band; and
O' G', the flaps or front portions of the collar, which are turned over, and may conceal the extremities of the button. 1
My invention is of great utility in retaining the collar, cuff, or other garment, in the proper position in which it is adjusted, instead of leaving it free to shift and yield, as'it does on the contracted neck of buttons in common use. Hence, my improvement not only promotes neatness and comfort in the dress, but greatly reduces-the wear upon the button-hole.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, anddesire to secure hyLetters Pat- I ent, is l As a new article of manufacture, the cuff or collarbutton, constructed with an elongated neck, N, plates F S, 011e or both, convex orconical head H, and projecting shoulders t', in the manner and for the purposes specified.
