SOLOMON RICHTER, OF MARTIN, PENNSYLVANI cone-mas.
i which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device adapted to be inserted into coke ovens, or the like situations, to draw out coke or other material, and particularly to a device'having a jaw which is opened when the drag is inserted into the oven, but which automatically closes as the drag is withdrawn.
My invention also comprises a device of the character described, having a front scraper and a rear scraper, the front scraper being so connected to the pivoted jaw that when the drag is withdrawn, the rear scraper will be raised so as to collect any coke or other material which may have fallen-upon the floor of the oven. Y
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, and to acquire aknowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved scraper with its jaw in open position; Fig. 2 is a like view with the jaw closed; Fig. 3 is a plan view with parts in the position shown in Fig. 1; and, Fig. t is a transverse section on t -4.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the sam'e of the side pieces" are downwardly and forreference characters;
In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing, 2' designates opposed side pieces of any suitable materiahpreferably of stiffened sheet metal. The 'fron't' end's wardly inclined and provided with a'downwardly and forwardly inclined scraper 3 which extends transversely across the entire drag. The rear ends of the side pieces 2 are downwardly and rearwardly inclined,
and at their rear ends are pivoted to the.
lower edge of a rear scraper 4. The rear scraper 4 is slotted, as at 5, for the passage of a draft bar or operating rod 6 by which the scraper is to be handled.v The forward end of this operating rod 6 is adapted to abut against a post 7 Whidh projects rear wardly from the front scraper3 in such position that when the scraper ispushed into in any way Specification of Letters Yatent. t t 3 mag,-

the oven, the rod 6 will be in alinement with the post 7. Pivotally mounted in the forward end of the operating rod 6 is a crank 8 whose arms 9 are supported in bearings 10 in the upper edges of the side pieces 2. The arms 9 are there provided with upwardly turned bell crank arms 11, so that as the crank 8 is turned by drawing upon the operating rod 6, the arms 11 will be likewise turned. The upper ends of the arms 11 are pi'votally attached to link bars 12 whose rear ends are pivotally connected to the rear or upper edge'of the scraper 4 at 13. This pivotal attachment is best secured by provid ing the upper edge of the scraper 4 with a rod 14 which reinforces the upper edge of the scraper and provides bearings for the ends of the links 12. The forward ends of the links 12 are connected to a transverse jaw 15 having downwardly turned teeth 16.
rod is drawn open to withdraw the drag, the
crank 8 will be turned revcrsely, thus depressing the jaw 15 into contact with the upper end of the scraper 3, and this movement will at the same time lift the rear end plate or scraper 4 which is pivoted as at 17 to the rear ends of the side pieces 2. This scraper will then act to collect any pieces of coke or coal which may have fallen upon the floor, and will carry these pieces ahead of the drag as it is withdrawn.
While I have shown the drag as being formed. Without ahottom plate, it is obvious that a bottom plate might be used without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I do'not wish to be limited to the details of construction, for the reason that the principles thereof might be embodied in a numher of different forms, without departing from theprinciplps of the device.
Having thus ascribed the invention, what is claimed as new is.:-
l. A drag of-the character described,c0mprising side pieces, a pivoted jaw: a longiframe, whereby upon a rearward mg crank arms.
tudinally slnftable operating rod, a crank upon the forward end and links attached on to either end of the crank and connected to the jaw.
' 2. A drag of the character described, eomprising'side pieces and a front scraper attached to the side pieces, a longitudinally shiftable operating rod, a crank connected to the forward end of the operatin rod and having upwardly extending arms, l inks pivoted to the arms, and a jaw carried by the said links. I
'3. A drag of the character described, comprising side ieees, an end piece pivoted to the rear en s of the side pieees, a front scraper attached to the forward ends of the side pieces, a longitudinally shiftable operating rod, a crank connected to the operating rod and having upwardly extending arms, and a jaw having rearwardly extending link rods pivoted to the rear end piece of the scraper and to the upwardly extend- 4.' A drag of the character described having a frame provided with a front scraper, a movable jaw coactin therewith, an operating rod longitudina ly shiftable with relation to the front scraper and frame, and
a connecting member between the operating rod and the movable jaw, said connecting member being pivoted at its middle to the draft upon the operating rod the connecting member shall be rotated to throw the jaw forward and downward against the front scraper, and upon a forward movement of the operating rod the connecting member shall be rotated to lift the jaw from the scraper.
5. A drag of the character described, including a front scraper having a rearwardly extending post, a longitudinally shiftable operating rod adapted to abut against said post, a crank mounted on the operating rod, and a jaw pivotally connected to said crank to be moved into engagement with the scraper when the operating rod is drawn rearward.
6. A drag of thecharacter described, comprising side pieces, an inclined forward scraper attached to the side'pieces, a rearly projecting post mounted on the scraper, a rear scraper pivotally' connected to the rear ends. of the side pieces, said scraper being slotted at its middle, an operating rod passing through said slot and having its forward end in alinement with of the operating rod,
the post, a crank connected to said operating rod and having its ends supported in bearings on the side pieces, upwardly extending. arms at the extremities of said crank, a jaw located to engage with the upper end of the forward scraper, and rearwardly extending link rods formed with said jaw pivoted at their middles to the upwardly extending arms of the crank and at their rear ends pivotally attached to the free edge of the rear scraper.
7. A drag of the character described having a frame formed with a front scraper, a jaw pivotally mounted to close against said front scraper, an operating rod having a limited movement with relation to the frame and scraper, and a connecting member between the -jaw and operating rod, said eonnccting member being pivoted at its middle, thus giving reverse movements to the operating rod and jaw respectively, thereby automatically opening and closing the jaw as the operating rod is ward. 1
8. A drag of the character described, having a frame, a forward scraper attached to the same, a jaw pivotally connected to the frame and adapted to e ose upon the forward scraper, a longitudinally movable operating rod connected to the jaw to close the samev upon a rearward movementof the rod and open the same upon a forward movement thereof, and a stop on the drag with which the operating rod engages at the termination of its forward jaw-opening movement.
S). A drag of the character described, having side pieces, a fixed rearwardly and upwardly inclined scraper at its forward end. a pivoted scraper at its rear end, an operating rod passing through the pivoted scraper, engageable at the end of its forward movement with a stop on the frame, and a movable jaw having connection with the operating rod, whereby it shall be moved down against the face of the scraper upon a rearward movement of the operatingrod and lifted from said scraper upon a forward inovement of the same.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
