I To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, CARL MARTIN, a subject of the German Empire, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sifters, of which the following is a specification. Y

My invention relates particularly to improvements in ash sifting scoops or shovels.

The object of my invention is to provide an implement which is adapted "to be used, in the manner of the ordinary scoop or shovel, in removing ashes from a stove or furnace or in charging the same with coal, and which is constructed to permit of sifting out the unburnt coal from the ash and of separately discharging the materials from the implement whereby to save the unburnt particles of fuel.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of an implement embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the same showing the hinged mouth partially open, and Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of a modified form thereof.

Referring to the drawings, 1 indicates the due of combustion has been removed from ward extremities, in any suitable manner, to

the lip or front edge 6 of the mouth piece. The rear extremities of the rods 5 pass freely through openings 7 formed in the back wall at a distance above the lower edge thereof. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, wherein the body is made in the form of a shovel, the inner ends of the rods 5 are supported in openings 7 formed in a plate 8 which extends transversely across the upper portion of the body near the back and is secured to the sides thereof.

The sifter bars are inclined from the mouth of the shovel or scoop toward the back so as to partially sift the materials while the implement is being filled. After the load of ash and unburnt coal is removed the instrument is slightly shaken whereby to complete the sifting. The hinged mouth is opened either by striking it against the edge of the receptacle into which the ash is to be dumped or otherwise, and the ash and coal are discharged into seperate receptacles so as to save the fuel.

Various changes may be made in the instrument without departing from the scope of my invention and I do not, therefore, restrict myself to the precise construction herein shown and described, except in so far as I am limited by the claims.

lVhat I claim is:

1. An implement comprising a body having a movable mouth and a sifter secured at. one end to the mouth and having its other extremity freely supported in the implement so as to be movable with the mouth.

2. An implement comprising a body hav- 7 ing a movable mouth and a sifter secured at one end to the mouth and having its other'extremity freely supported in the implement so as to be movable with the mouth, said sifter being inclined from the mouth toward. the back of the implement.

3. An implement comprising a body having raised sides and back, a mouth having lateral flanges pivoted to the sides of the body and adapted to be swung toward and away from the body, a plurality of sifter bars pivotally secured at their front ends to the mouth and having their rear ends freely supported in the body at a point above the bottom thereof.
