My present invention relates to fireplaces and more specifically to an improved controlling means for the draft on a iireplace.
Among the objects and advantages of the invention Y may be enumerated First, eliminating the necessity for running rotary shaftsl or other transmission members through the walls of the iireplace.
Second, maintaining convenience and accuracy of control inspite of suclrelimination, and f f Third, simplifyingv the-mechanical trans.- mission exposed to the heat of; the lire.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will becomeapparent' as the description proceeds. A V

Figure 1 is a ore and aft section through. a fireplace, indicating-the application ot a structure according to the invention thereJ Figure 2 is a fragmentary similar section showing the parts in a different position.V
Figure 3 is` a view on line 3 3 of Figure 1 shwing the transmission in elevation.-
'Figure'4 is a sectional view on line 44 of Figure 3. n
A Figure 5 is an elevation of the handle member, and
Figure 6 is of Figure 2.
In the embodiment of the invention selecty yed for illustration the fireplacey comprises the usual rear wall 10 and front wall 12 between'which is formed the throat 14 opening. into the Hue 16. The damper 18 is in this instance pivoted at 20 on a unitary dome ,structure including, the rear `rail 22 and front plate 24. The foregoing structurel is old and well known in the art andv per se forms no part ofthe present invention.v
A two piece support 26, 28, is suitably fastened. in the throat opposite the .damper 18, as by fastening it on the plate 24 lb y machine screws 27. The lifter 28 is in the form o-fa bell crank lever having one arm pivoted at 30 between lugs 82 on the support, and damper bysicle links 34. The lever is veX- tended back of its angle at 36 and terminates inV an arcuate shoe Y38. lying in a plane perendicnlar 'to'that of thefrest of the lever and facing the support 26,28; 1
The operating member 40 comprises a lcylindrical portion lpivotally held between a detail section on line 6-6 .the other arm connected to the' Aity of slight irregularities. '15',
" Application filed August 7, 1925. seriai Nq. 48,323.
I provide a handle member 5 2, the in ain reach of which is a shallow U in cross section 'adapted to fit over the tang 50. A series of'equally spaced holes 54 is formed in the handle member. device, registering holes are drilled in the tang-'50 and the parts bolted together by bolts 56 as clearly shown in Figure 6. The handle member is'preferably of castiron, and in assembling theunit in any particular fireplace it may be bolted to the tang so as to be of just the right length to project a convenientdistance below the lower edge oi the front wall 12. It the reach 52 is longer than necessary, the excess at the upper end canv be broken olf readily by a sharp blow with ahammer.
The lower end of the handle terminates in a target 58 apertured at 60 to receive the end of a poker or the like for swinging the handle from side to side. As the plate 24 1s at an angle of substantially 45Ov to the horizontal, it will be obvious that the 60 bend in the tang 50 will set the handle 52 at any angle inclined about 15o downwardly land rearwardly from the vertical. To operate the device, the handle 52 is swung from side to side, either by inserting a tool in the aperture 6() or merely by pushing against the side of the handle; The movement of the ,damper 18 in response to the swinging of the handle will depend'v on thel contour of In assembling the y the cam face on the shoe 38. The finger 46 v of the operating member 40 wipes across this face and pushes the lifter from the position shown `in Figure 2 to that of Figure r1f. Referring in detail to Figure 4, it will be noted that the ends of the cam face are provided with stop hooks 62 to limit the eXtreme movement of theV parts and that the face of the cam is provided with a plural'- More specificalthere is a slight pocket 64 at each end, andportions 66 sloping inwardly toward the axis of the operating member, alternating with vtwo slight/recessions or portions of lesser inclination at 68. In operating the device, there will be a material change in the force required to move the handle each time the finger registers with one of the recessione 68. This is of material assistance to the operator in dividing the range of movement of the handle into three substantially equal parts. rlhe inclination of the face oit the cam is nowhere suliiciently steep so that the linger will slip back after the o perator relieves the handle 52 of the moving force, but he can feel the parts move from closed position into position one-third open, two-thirds open and full open. Thus, after moving the parts one-third open, he can select an intermediate position with considerably greater accuracy than he could if the series of intermediate position were not, in fact, marked for him b y the variations in resistance to the movement.A Y
lVithont further elaboration, the foregoing will so fully explain the gist of my invention, that others may, by applying current knowledge, readily adapt the same for use under various conditions of service, without eliminatingcertain features which may properly be said to constitute the essential items of novelty involved, which items are intended to be defined and secured to me by the following claims.
