To aZZ whom c't may concern Be it known that PEARL-E Rosoon GAW- THROP, Sn, citizen of the United States, residing at Adrian, in the county of Upshur and State of West Virginia, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fa ater or Muck Bailers, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hand bailers adapted to be used for moving muck, slush and similar material in close places, and it consists in the novel features hereinafter described and claimed.

An object of the invention is to provide a bailer of the character stated which may be used to advantage for moving or removing the material in mines, between railway ties, in boats or other places where the material may be located and where the space for operating or manipulating the bailer is limited.

A further object of the invention is to provide for a bailer as stated, a bowl portion of special design and configuration which is adapted to receive andretain the material while the operator is in the act or" scooping it up and casting the same over his head or shoulder, thereby preventing the material from escaping from the bowl while it is being lifted and cast and protecting the operator in his person and clothing from the drippings which otherwise would fall from the bailer and deposit upon him.

Vfith these and other objects in view the bailer comprises a bowl portion, made from sheet metal, and in the general former" a truncated cone, closed at its larger end and open at its smaller end. The sides and top of the bowl are flat or substantially so. The bowl is longer at its top side than at its bottom thereby providing space for the re ception of a maximum amount of the material and affording a fulcrum point at the bottom of the bowl whereupon it may be rocked while the material is being gathered therein. A socket member is mounted at the larger end of the bowl and receives the lower portion of a handle. nected with the intermediate portion of the handle and the top side of the bowl.

Fig. 4 is a side elevation'ot' a modified form of the bailer. 7 As illustrated in the accompanying drawing the bailer comprises a bowl portion 1 having a socket member 2 mounted at the rear end thereof. The end of a handle 3 is inserted in the said socket member and the handle is disposed with its longitudinal dimension pitched at an obtuse angle to the median longitudinal dimension of the bottom of the bowl. A brace i is connected at one end with the intermediate portion of the handle and at its other end with the top side of the bowl. V

The bowl 1 is madeifrom sheet metal the edges of the sheet being overlapped and se cured. together forming a seam 5 which is disposed along the median longitudinal dimension of the top side of the bowl. The bowl is in the generalform, in side elevation, of a truncated cone having a substantially semi-ovate larger end. The bottom 6 of the bowl is curved or convexed transversely. The sides 7 are flat and the top 8 is fiat or substantially so. The bowl is open at its smaller forward end as at 9 and the substan tially semi-ovate portion 10 closes the rear end of the bowl and forms the rear side thereof. The portion 10 merges with the rear portion of the bottom 6 at a point 11 which is located at a point between the ends of the top side8 and which may serve as a rocking or fulcrum point for the bowl when the implement is in use and the material is being gathered in the bowl.
