KEYBOARD MECHANISM OF TYPOGRAPHIC MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Pa ten tad \NQV. 30, 1909.
Application filcdSeptember 14, 1907. Serial No. 392,861.
to an It'll/U771. ti may conccre lie l-l known that Lllnnnnn'r PEARCE, a sub ect of the King of the Umted'Kin'gdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and residing at the Linotype and Machinery Works,' Broadheath, Altrincham, in the county'of' Chester, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in the Keyboard Mechanism ot Typographic Machines, of which the following is a specification.v
respective rod must be withdrawn for a longer or shorter distance according to the position of the said-lever, lengthwise of its series, and befafterward replaced,
The object-of the-present invention is to dispense \jviththe-two pivot rods and to movide;independent journals and bearings 'ior each cam levcrin such a way that any one of them can be taken-out of the machine 1 and either replaced or substituted quickly and easily without disturbing any of the other cam levers.
In the aceompa'nylng drawings which are to be taken as part of this speclfication and read therewith Figure 1 is a transverse section of as much 'of the keyboard mechanisn'n-as is necessary for illustrating the present invention; Fig. 2 is'a rear elevation, and Fig. 3, a plan of part of such mechanism; Fig. 4 isan elevation ot'a detached portion thereof, and'Fig. 5 is a plan of one of the cam levers, with its cam pivoted therein. f
in carrying the invention into effect, 'eaeh cam lever 1, as shown best in Fig. 5, has its own axle 2 incorporated with it. The fixed vertical plate 3 which, in typographic ma chines as ordinarily constructed, has generally provided or supported the bearings for' its series of com levers, is, according to the present inventlon, slotted or rooved in both I directions, that is, transverse y of its length l as at 4, to receive the levers themselves, and
longitudinally as at o, to receive the axles 2, the slot appertaining to each half of such. axles being preferably separated by a web or partition 6 from the slot appertaining to the next adjacent half axle. as seen best in the broken away part of Fig. 3. lVhenthe series of leversl are in working :0 position, they, or some portion of them, project above ihe'top of the fixed vertical plate il -A cap plate 7 notched a-= at 8 across its bottom edge, see particularly- Fig. 4-, fits 'do vinnpon the fixed vertical plate 3, its (:5 notches S standing over the respective levers l, asshonn best in Fig. 1 The. cap plates 7 are each held in their efi'ective position by two spring catches 9, one bearing on each of its ends, and both secured as by screws 10 to the respective ends of the respective cam carriage frame 11. The spring catches 9 shown in the drawings are each formed of two parts secured together by screws l2, one part substan-tially horizontal and the other part substantially vertical, the downwardly extending portions of the said catches terminating in rounded ends which are adapted to engage with correspondinglyshaped recesses 13 in the respective cap plate 7. In the right-hand part of Fig. 1', that is to say,'.to the right of the escapement rod 14, and in Figs. 2 and-3 the cam levers or carriages l are shown in their working condi tion, their axles 2 being held down in the slots 5 by the cap plate 7, which, in turn, is held in position by the spring catches 9. At the left-hand side of the escapement rod 14 in Fig. 1, there is shown the manner in which a cam lever'l and its cam are removed from the machine, one such device being represented as partly withdrawn, for which purpose the appropriate cap plate 7 had previously been removed. after the respective catphes 9 had been released from the reces/ses 13.
It is to be observed as a matter of considerable importance that the above-described removal of a cam lever or carriage, is effected without, in any way disturbing any of the other cam levers or carriages.
The parts of the mechanism which are represented in the drawings but which have not, been hereinbefore referred to, form no part of the present invention, and therefore call for no special description.
I claim, 4
1. In the keyboard mechanism of a typo grapic machine the combination with cam carriages adapted to be released by the operation of the key levers, of an axle for each cam carriage independent of the axle of any other of such cam carriages and about the axis of which first named axle the said carriage is adapted to turn, a bearing I for each axle, and retaining means adapted l to prevent the escape of an axle. from its bearing.
, 2. In the keyboard mechanism of a typo-- graphic machine the combination with cam carriages adapted to be released by the operation of the key levers and an axle for each cam carriage independent of the axle of any other of such cam carriages and about the axis of which first named axle the "said carriage is adapted to turn, of a plate having slots or grooves adapted to receive the axles of the cam carriages, adapted to prevent the escape of from said slots or grooves.
3. In the keyboard mechanism of a typographic machine the combination with cam carriages adapted to be released by the operation of the key levers, an axle for each cam carriage independent of the axle of any and a cap said axles carr ages adapted to be released riage is adaptedip turn, a plate having slots 5 or grooves adapted to receive the axles of 3 the cam carriages, webs or partltions separating adjacent slots or grooves from each other, and retaining means adapted to re vent the escape of said axles from said s ots orflrooves.
In. witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
HEfiBERT PEARCE.
