UNITED STATES JOHN W. PAUL, OF KITTANNING, PENNSYLVANIA.
TYPE-WRITER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 27, mos.
application filed. July 5, 90 Serial No. 324,905.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. PAUL, incitizen of the United States, residing at Kittenning, in the county of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in T ypeWriters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to typewriters and consists in certain improvements in the con struction thereof as will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings as follows:-Figure 1 shows a side elevation of the typewriter with my device in place therein. Fig. 2, a
side elevation of the auxiliary frame of the typewriter. Fig. 3,21 lan view of saidauxiliary frame, the same icing partly in section to better show construction. Fig. 4, an end elevation of said auxiliary frame, a part of it being in section to bet for show construction.
A marks the main frame of the machine.
This may be of any desired form but preferably of such form as to adapt it for a front strike typewriter. Extending inwardly from the main frame are the supporting lugs (t. 'lhese lugs are each provided with an annular groove (1.. An auxiliary frame B has the plates 0 at the sides, the plate 0 at the rear end, and the cross plate I) atthe front. The rear end of the plate I) is notched at c, the notch being of such proportion as to lit in the groove it. Near the front ends of the side plates and extending upwardly from the bottom thereof are the notches c". The front sides of the notches have the bevel c, the sides of the notches r" being such as to lit in the groove (1..
'lhc basket (.3 of the ty iewritcr is mounted in the auxiliary frame 3. It is preferably iivotally mounted, the arms carrying the basket being pivoted at c on the sides of the frame. By pivotally mounting the basket upper and lower case letters may be obtained in the well known manner. The key levers l) are also mounted in this auxiliary frame and are so positioned as to come into properrelation to the universal bar I) when the auxiliary frame is in place in the main frame as clearly shown in Fig, .2. By this construction the type bars and incidental mecl'ianism (not shown) may be easily removed from the machine to give access to the part and foltho convei'iicnce of assembling. When the auxiliary frame is placed in the main frame it is rigidly mounted, that is it is not rocked or moved in the operation of the machine, the type basket being moved relatively to the auxiliary frame.
What I claim as new is 1. In a typewriter, the combination ofa main frame; a universal bar mounted on the 'main'frame; an auxiliary frame removably mounted in the main frame; and the ty e basket and key levers mounted in the auxile5 iary frame, said key levers being in position to actuate the universal bar when the auxiliary frame is-mounted in thelmain frame and the type basket being movably-mounted in :the auxiliary frame. i
2. In a typewriter, the combination of a main frame; a universal bar mounted in said main frame; an auxiliary frame removably and fixedly mounted on the main frame; a frypc basket mounted in the auxiliary frame; said basket being movable in the auxiliary frame for upper and lower case letters and key levers mounted in the auxiliary frame, said key levers being in position to actuate is-in place.
3. In a typewriter, the combination of a main frame having the lug (1. extending from the sides thereof, said .lugs being provided with the groove a"; an auxiliary frame having the side plate I) in which are arranged the v slots c and inproper relation to permittlie mounting of said auxiliary frame with the sides of the slots in said plates around the lugs o and in the grooves a I 4. .In a typewriter, the combination of a main frame having the lug a extending from the sides thereof, said lugs being provided with the grooves a; an auxiliary frame having the side plates 1) in which are arranged the slots 1" and c in )ropcr relation to permit the mounting of said auxiliary frame with the sides of the slots in said side plates around the lugs a and in the grooves a; the type plates b and the keylevers I) carried by said auxiliary frame.
5. In a typewriter, the combination with a main frame and platen; of a universal bar frame rcmovably mounted in the main frame; and a type basket and key lovers mounted in the auxiliary frame, the basket boing'movable in the auxiliary frame for uplpcr and lower case letters and adapted to 119 the universal bar when the auxiliary frame 80' basket (I pivotally mounted between the side mounted in the main frame; an auxiliary of the laten and the ke'levers boiin ada t- 5 frame removalny mounted in the main 7 y D r ed to aetuate the universalbar.
6 In a typewriter, the combination with a main frame and platen-;--of an auxiliary frame removably mounted in the main frame; a type basket mounted in the auxiliary frame, adaptedto carry type bars arranged to strike the front of the platen; said basket being movablein the auxiliary frame 5 for upper and lower case letters and means 5 for changing the relations of the type basket and platen for upper and-lower case letters. I
7. in a typewriter, the combination with a frame; and a type basket mounted in the auxiliary frame and movable therein relatively to the piaten for upper and lower case letters, and adapted to carry type bars arranged to strike the front of the platen.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
