My invention relates-to improvements in type-writers, andv especially to improve- A mentsin that class of typewriting machines "having a type basket and a single-lettter t 'pe movement, s'uch as the Remington and ensmore machines, andthe objects of my invention are to increase thespeed of execuwritingj machines, s
adapted to print syllables of three letters or tion and the utility of typewrting machines. In my invention much larger than the ordinary basket used in said class of machines, and I 'arran e the `single-letter types at the rear of the asket In the rawings illustrating my devinez-'-` construct .the basket and they are dperat'ed inthe same manner and by the. same key-board as sOrdna'rily usedin suchclass of machines. In Fig. 2 the side rail of each frame is cutaway to show the bottom rods 18, 18, 18
etc. Downward pressure upon the-key 5 rocks the key-lever 7 upon the fulcrum rod 8 and raisesthe opposite end. The rods 18, 18, 18 etc. pass through the' U-shaped slots 16, 16 16, etc. 'and are carried upwardly at each pressure on a word key.

In my invention I arrange the frames 17,
17 etc. to the rear of the general mechanism 20 of the machine, and I suspend the ratchet t bar 24 by hangers 25, -25 which are rigidly attached to the release lever rod 26, said rod being journaled to the carriage frame at 27, 27. The holding ratchet wheel 28 1s keyed to the end of the shaft 29 which'carries' the single-letter escapement 30.. By this constructionl do not disturb the ac- Ytion of the regular mechanism appliedto the single letters, andam able to locatdthe 30 entire word escapement mechanism to the reir of the regular mechanism. Theratchet b'ai 24 is detained by engagement of one of its teeth with a corresponding-tooth of. the
holding ratchet wheel 28. `When releasedv from this engagement the bar 24 is moved with the carriage vby the ordinaryA carriage spring 37, provided for that purpose.
By downward pressure upon one of the keys 5, one of the escapements as 2'0 is 40 brought upwardly into engagement'with the lateral teeth upon the ratchet 'bar 24 and vraises said bar free from the holding ratchet wheel 28. The carriage spring, as 37, aforesaid, then o crates to `move the ratchet bar 24 ily and revolves one ofthe escapements, as 20, in engagement therewith, untill the lug 31 strikes against the st op 32. At `the same time the downward pressure' upon the key 5 operates the type-bar 33 and foi-'ces the type-head 14 upwardly against the platen. By reason of the arrangement of the frames in the guides 34, 34, 34, etcrit isnecessary to off-set the escapement supporting standards 39, 39, 39 etc. at dierent degrees (except one of the escapement supporting standards 39, supporting escapement 21) each of lsaid standards being offset at a prop er degree to bringthe escapernent, as

It will be observed that the word typebars as 33 must be arra-nged'in the .basket in front of the fulcrum rod 8 so that the downward pressure upon a key5 will operate a type-bar bearing a word type, as 14. 4The eyes 8 are located in top lugs 9 so that the fulcrum rod 8 extends abo've' the ordiinterfere withv their operation. l
In the operation o f my .inventionthe 0perator by pressing4 downwardly upon one of the keys 5 actuates the type-head 14 up-' wardly toward the platen, and at the-same timeY by the'rocking of the key-lever 7 upon nary keV-levers of the machine and does not the fulcrum rod 8 the opposite end of the key-lever 7 is raised and carries with it onev of the escapement supporting frames.v The full downwardpressure upon the key causes the escapement, as 22, to engage and raise the ratchet bar 24. The 'strength of the carriage spring'37 is much greater than the strength ofthe escapement spring 35. The carriage is moved horizontally by the tension of the-carriage spring 37, compressing the spring 35 untilzthe lug 31st`ri-kes against the stop V32. The operation of my inventiondees not in any manner interfere with the operation 'of' the single-letter keys.-
The rods 18', 18, 18 etc. .extend through 'all @insee of the U-shaped slots 16, 16, 16 etc. of each respective series of Word key-levers. When a Word key-lever is operated it raises the escapement frame, as 20,'and the rod 18 is permitted to travel in the U-shaped slots 16, 16, 16, etc. of all otlierword key-levers in said series Without interfering with or actuating them in any Way.' For this purpose the slots are made Wider at the top so as to give a free action to said rod 18.
The U-shaped slts 16, 16,16, etc. are of sutticient depth to permit the operation of the rods 18,18, 18 etc. below the range of the ordinary single-letter key-levers, and likewise to permit of the operation of the ordinary single-letter key-levers Without coming into contact With said rods 18,' 18, 1S, etc. y
Having thus described my invention 'what u I claim to have `invented and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. ln a. typewriting machine of the class described, the combination ,Withjthe ordinary mechanism of the machine of one or more series ofword key-levers, a 'fulcrum rod extending through eyes in the keylevers, escapement supporting frames, perpendicular guides for the frames, dependent lugs integral with the key-levers, near the rear ends, and having U-shapedslotsA Which inclose the base rod .of the escapement sup.-
porting frame, a toothed escapement Wheel described, the combination with the ordi-p nary mechanism of such a machine of sev,-

3. in a typewriting machine of the class described, lthe combination with the ordinary mecha-nismof the machine, of a Word key-lever, a fulcrum rod extending through an eye in the key-lever, an escapement supporting frame, a perpendicular guide for the same, a lug on the key lever, near the 'rear end, and having a slot inclosing the base rod ofthe escapement supporting trame, a toothed escapement Wheel carried by the escapement supporting frame adapted to engage and raise the ordinary ratchet bar of the machine and revolve a determinate distance, a spring to returnsaid escapement Wheel to its normal position when not in engagement, a type bar lever linked to the 4front portion of the key-lever, a type bar operated upwardly thereby, ay type head carried by said type bar, said type head having a plurality ot' letters in a horizontal alinelment, substantially as shown.

In a typewriting machine of the class described, toothed escapement Wheels in combination Withthe ratchet bar, means for raising said escapenient Wheels into engagement'W-ith the ratchet bar and raising the bar and tension springs to provide a return revolution of the escapement Wheels When loweredtrom the bar, substantially as shown and described.'
5. In a typeWriting machine of the class described, the combination with a ratchet bar, of a series of toothed escapement wheels,
-means for raising each of said es capement Wheels into engagement with the ratchet bar and'raising' the bar,tension springs to provide a return revolution of the escapement.
Wheels, when dropped from the bar, and Word-keys in congunction with the operating means indicating the corresponding escapement Wheels substantially as shown and described.-
