UNITED TATES CHRISTIAN AUGUSTUS ALBRECHT, OF BERLIN, GERMANY.
TOOL FOR CUTTING CAST TYPE LINES IN LlNOTYPE-MACHHNES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 696,532, dated April 1, 1902. Application filed OctoberlZ, 1901. Serial No.78,466. (N0 model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN AUGUSTUS ALBRECHT, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Berlin, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Linotype-Machines, of which the following is an exact specification.
My invention relates to improvements in mechanism for trimming the edges of the cast type-lines in linotype-machines, and has especially for its purpose to provide trimming mechanism which can be adjusted so as to trim for type-lines of dilferent heights.
My invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front view of the tool. is a side View of the same. on line w an of Fig. l.
The cutting-knives e andf are situated in a slide 9, which slides up and down in front of the type-mold of the linotype-machine, so that in case the type-line is cast and is partly pushed out, so as to project over the front side of the mold, this slide goes downward and planes the edges of the so-projecting typeline. The knife f is fixed in the slide g by means of a screw 9. The knife e is movable, so as to allow the same to be adjusted according to the height of the type-line. In order to allow an adjusting of the knife 6, the end cl of the knife e opposite to the cutting edge of the same is threaded, so as to form a screwspindle. Upon this spindle d a nut c, which has the form of a disk, is situated. As may be seen from Fig. 2, the disk 0 is provided with grooves b on its circumference, in which grooves fits the upper edge of a lever a, pressed upward by means of a spring a. Each groove 6 is provided with a character or number indicating the distance of the knives, so that this distance can be adjusted to the different heights of the type-lines. In order to press the knife 6 toward the knife f, a spring h, fixed to the upper side of the slide, is provided, the free end of which spring always presses against the end cl of the knife 6. To
Fig. 2 Fig. 3 is a section the slide g a pin 71 is fixed, while to the disk 0 a pin is fixed. The pin '5 is situated in the same distance from the center line of the spindle cl as the pin 70, so that in turning the disk 0 the movement of the same will be stopped by the pin 7c touching the pin 1'.
the means described the disk ccan only make one revolution, so that in case the lever a is situated in that groove 1) corresponding to the height of the type-line to be planed the distance of the cutting edges of the knives e and fmust be absolutely right. In case the pins 2' and 70 were provided it would be possible that the lever a could be situated in the right groove 17, While the distance between the cutting edges of the knives e and f would be too small or too large.
In case the knife 6 has a cylindrical form a pin Z is provided, which slides in a slot m of the slide g, so as to prevent a turning of the knife.
Having thus fully described the nature of this invention, what I desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In a mechanism for trimming the cast type-lines in linotype-machines, the combination with a slide g, of a knifef rigidly fixed in the slide, a knife 8 threaded on the end cl opposite to the cutting edge, a not 0 in form of a disk situated upon the spindle of the knife 6 and provided with grooves b on its circumference, a lever a pressed against the circumference of the disk 0 and a spring h fixed to the slide 9 and situated so as to press the knife e toward the knifefsubstantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a mechanism for trimming the cast type-lines in linotype-machines, the combination with a slide g, of a knife f rigidly fixed in the slide, a knife a threaded on the end d opposite to the cutting edge, a nut c in form of a disk situated upon the spindle of the knife e and provided with grooves h on its circumference, a lever a pressed against the circumference of the disk 0 and a spring h fixed to the slide 9 and situated so as to press the knife 6 toward the knife f, a pin 71 fixed to the slide 9 and a pin 7.: fixed to the disk 0, both pins being situated in the same distance from the center line of the spindle cl substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHRISTIAN AUGUSTUS ALBRECHT.
