provide a space-bar for the above-indicated I purpose which will be strong and light and the parts of which will be securely connected and reliably guided upon one another. To this end I construct the space-bar as will be fully described hereinafter and particularly 2o pointed out in the claims.

Figure l is an edge View of my improved spacebar. Fig. 2 is a perspective view thereof. Fig. 3 is a face View of the bar; and Figs. 4,5%, and 7are sectional plans on lines It 4, 5 5, 6 t', and 7 7, respectively, of Fig. 3. The improved spare-bar consists of two parts or wedges, the upper one of which I will term the stationary member, inasmuch as it is held against upward movement in the ordinary manner, while the lower part will be termed the movable member, asit is driven up by the usual or any approved mechanism for the purpose of expanding the space-bar.
The movable member consists of a wedge- 4o section A, tapering'from the bottom to the top and provided with a longitudinal open: ing or slot A', the edges of which are beveled so as to form a dovetail slideway A2. The direction of this slideway is parallel with the inclined inner face of the section A. This slidewa1 is continued to the bottom of the section A, the central portion of which below the slot A' is for this purpose of reduced thickness, as shown at A3.

On the front face of the wedge-section A, with inserted thin liners, is secured, as by means of rivets O, a shield-section B of substantially the same outline as the section A, and also provided with a slot, B corresponding in size and location to the slot A', except that the slot B is continued downward below the lower end of the slot A'. The shield Bis of spring-steel and of uniform thickness from beveled to form a dovetail slideway B2.
The stationary member of the space-bar is arranged between the movable wedge A and the shield B and has sliding engagement with both. This member has the customary ears or lugs D to guide the space-bar in its Inovement and to hold the said member stationary when the space-bars are being expanded. The central portion of the stationary member is reduced in thickness, as shown at D D2, the recess in the front face being equalin depth to the thickness of the shield B, so that said shield will be i'lush with the ears D and D6. The recess D2 in the rear side forms a guide for the movable wedge Aand is equal in depth to the thickness of the top of the wedge A, so that the top of said wedge will be flush with the ears D and D6. The central portion of the stationary member is wedge-shaped, being tapered from top to bottom-that is, in the opposite direction to the wedge A. The stationary wedge has on its rear face a plate D3, the edges ot which are beveled to tit into the dovetail A2 of the movable wedge A. O`n the front face of its web D5 the stationary wedge is provided with a thickened portion or plate D4, the longitudinal edges of which are beveled to take into the dovetail B' of the shield B. The lower end of the plate D3 of the stationary wedge may, if the movable Inember of the Wedge is pushed up far enough, come in registry with the reduced portion A3 of the wedge A or nearly so, and to prevent the stationary member from binding between the wedge and shield when pushed `up thin liners are inserted between them and held by means of rivets C.

Superior results are obtained, however, owing particularly to the fact that the shield B is of uniform thickness instead of being Wedge-shaped, as in other constructions known to me. The combination of the movable memberofthe spacefbar, said .member consisting of a rear wed ge-section and a front shield-section connected at one end and spaced at the other, and as tationary `wed ge member located between the said rear wedge and shield and having .with Veach -ofthem an engagement which allows of longitudinal sliding movement but prevents ,theshieldand rear wedge from spneading,a\w,ay lfrom the stationary wed ge.
