The object of the invention is prirnarilj,7 to greatly prolong the lite ot' the matrices. at a slight increase in the cost of manufac ture.
T o this end it consists in providing each matrix with two identical characters and 'with the same character' in a different face or style less frequently used= so 'that the use and wear of a matrix; may be distributed between the duplicate characters and its li-c thus prolonged until the third and less .fre-- quently used character has become inopera. tivefrom use. .D
' Matrices for linot'ype machines hare heretofore been provided with the. saine character in variant forms, so that Aeither character could be presented to the molll at will. Certain faces or forms are used with much greater frequency than others; ordinary reading characters are used more or black laces. iVhen, therefore, a. matrix has a4 Asingle character ol eaclLtorm, it is found that the character most frequently used becomes Worn and inoperative and the niatrixltherefore useless. while the second character is still in good condition. In crmsequeeice of this fact there is a large lose to the printer due to the rejc` `ion of matrices which are `in inoperative co. iition as to oneset ot char acters. By providing such matrices With tivo of the frequently use-tl characters instead of one, we are enabled to distribute the work between the two characters and thus prolong; the life of the matrix. The same extension'of life is' also secured when the matrix is provided with two or three, characters' identical in every respect, as they mav he presented successively tothe mold and the wear distributed between them, the type faces produced being the same relgardw for exan'iple,
less of which character on the matrix is pre' sented tothe mold. l
Referring to the drawings: Figaro 1 1s an elevation of a. matrix with three intaglio letters, of which tiro are identical. Fig. 2 1s aside View et the same. Fig. 3 is a side View of a modification of the saine. Fig.
l illustrates the mann r in which the matrix j shown at. liigs. 2 and 3 is so applied to a mold that its lower intaglio letter is opposed to 'the single cell or slot; and Fig. illnstretes the manner in which the same matrix is so applied to the said mold that its middleintaglio letter is opposite to the single cell or slot. V
The matrix b shown in Figs. 2 and 3 is provided with three supeposed intaglio letters l. l and 2 of the same tout. l'lhe tivo letters l, l above and be. :ov are exactl)T alike, whiletne third letter 2 in the middle is of a distinct kind. or say thicker or bolder than the lornier. 'lhen the one of the tivo intaglio letters l, l is used until it worn out, alter which il other one is engaged for use in casting; tyr. lt is assumed that either of the two letters l, 1 is used more frequently than the third letter '2,.so that the latter may he. Worn ont about at the saine time the other letters. We do no?l however, limit, ourselves in this respect. lllith some of the matrices 'the third letter 2 may represent a. different character, which is seldom used, as is tor example shown at Fig. 3. Figs. and 5 illustrate the manner in which the matrix Y; may be applied to the mold of an ordinary linotype machine. The mold 0 is. provided with two grooves e and el parallel to the mouth'ot the single cell or slet d, and.
the lusts l of the matrices -72' are arranged to usa tile character imidentical, separately t with. an additional presione therein and l haring an edge of' 'uniform thicltness provided with plural,
