Description

J. M. ROSE.
VENTILATOB.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 19, 1908 Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES IM. ROSE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR T0 MERCHANT & EVANS 00., OF CAMDEN, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
VENTILATOR.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. ROSE, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Ventilators, of which the following is a specification.
One object of my invention is to provide a ventilator of simple and substantial construction which shall have its parts so arranged as to permit of one of them being moved at will from an open to a closed position or vice versa in order to cut off or permit a fiow of air or gas through said ventilator.
Another object of the invention is to provide a ventilator, which in addition to being provided with a movable structure for controlling the fiow of air or gas, shall be equipped with a transparent sky-light or cover.
I further desire to provide a ventilator having a stationary transparent cover and a movable valve or damper for controlling the flow of air or gas, which valve shall be so placed as to not interfere with the passage of light through the ventilator.
These objects I attain in the following manner, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a vertical section of my improved ventilator, and, Fig. 2, is a plan of the ventilator shown in Fig. 1.
In the above drawings, A is the cylindrical base or body section, the top edge of which is preferably curved outwardly to a slight extent as shown. Riveted or otherwise fastened to this base section are any suitable number of upwardly extending bars a, in the present instance four, and the upper ends of these are bent outwardly and inclined downwardly to a slight extent so as to receive and rigidly support the upper portion of the ventilator. This latter portion consists of a top section B formed as part of a conical surface having at its upper edge an upwardly extending flange Z) and in the present instance having fixed to the underside of its upper portion an annular reinforcing strip 6 which projects inwardly so as to form a support for a circular plate or sheet of glass, indicated at C, which fits inside said flange Z). The side section of the ventilator, indicated at D, is also formed as part of a conical surface and has at its upper edge an outwardly extending flange d which fits Specification of Letters Patent.

under and is riveted or otherwise firmly attached to the lower edge of the top section B; the construction being such that it slopes inwardly.
With the above described arrangement there is provided a structure whose outlet is formed by the annular space between the top of the bottom section A and the annular side section, and for the purpose of closing this outlet when desired I provide a substantially fiat annular piece E which is guided partly by the bars a which extend vertically within it and partly by the side section D. The dimensions of this piece are such that when it is in its lower position it rests upon the top edge of the bottom section A and en gages the lower portion of the side section D so as to completely prevent the flow of air or gas through the ventilator. For the purpose of raising this annular valve I provide it with a diametrically extending bar 6, from the center of which another bar 6 extends clownwardly. A chain or suitable cable 6 is connected to the lower end of said bar and passes up and over a pulley e fastened to a cross bar a fixed to the bottom section A. By pulling downwardly upon the end of the chain or cable 6 the valve E is raised from the position shown in full lines Fig. l, to the position shown in dotted lines, thus opening the ventilator and permitting a flow of air or gas through it, It is to be noted that the annular valve member E is so placed in the ventilator that it does not cut oif or in any way interfere with the passage of light through the glass skylight G into the bottom section and yet it very effectually controls the passage of air or gas through the device.
I claim: 7
1. A ventilator having a bottom section and a top structure supported thereby so as to form an annular outlet for the ventilator, with an annular valve extending outwardly from the upper end of the bottom section, and capable of controlling the flow of air to said outlet, said valve being placed to be held by gravity in a closed position.
2. A ventilator consisting of a bottom section, a top section and a side section, said parts being arranged to provide an annular outlet for the ventilator, with an annular valve formed to simultaneously engage the side and bottom sections, in order to out off the flow of air through the ventilator, and means for moving said valve to open same.
3. The combination in a ventilator of a bottom section, a top section having a transparent portion, a side section extending around the bottom section so as to provide an annular outlet for the ventilator, with a substantially fiat annular member movable to permit or cut off How of gas through said outlet and normally tending to move to its closed position under the action of gravity.
4:. The combination in a Ventilator of a bottom section, a conical top section having a central opening, a body of glass mounted in said opening, a side section surrounding the bottom section so as to provide an annular outlet, and a fiat annular sheet eX- tending between said side section and the bottom section, with means for raising said sheet at will, to open the outlet.
5. The combination in a Ventilator of a top section, a bottom section and a side section, said side section extending around the bottom section so as to form an annular outlet, with a flat annular member extending between the side section and the bottom section, and means for controlling the position of said annular member to open or close the ventilator.
6. A ventilator having bottom, top and side sections arranged to provide an annular outlet, with a substantially flat valve eX- tending horizontally from the top of the bottom section to the side section.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
