ADJUSTABLE VENTILATOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM Cnanvn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookfield, in the county of Madison and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Ventilator, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to adjustable ventilators.
The object of the present invention is to provide a ventilator the opening of which may be regulated to any desired amount.
A further object is to provide a ventilator in which there will be little or no likelihood of rain or sleet being driven therethrough.
A further object .is to provide a ventilator of tapering outline with means whereby the opening of the ventilator may be adjusted from the interior of the building to which it is applied and which means also serves as a guide for the moving portion of the device. With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combi-- nation and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings accompanying this specification and forming a part thereof, the
preferable form of my invention is illustrated, in which Figure 1 is a sectional view in elevation of my improved ventilator in an open posi tion. Fig. 2 is a fragmental view illustrating the ventilator closed. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 3--3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings in which simi lar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, a stationary conical member tis provided at its lower extremity with the flanges 5 and 6 which diverge downwardly and which may be secured to an upstanding rim or allied structure surrounding the opening in the roof with which the improved ventilator herein disclosed is to be used. on a line adjacent the lower extremity and parallel to the lower edge or base of the coni cal member. The stationary member is frusto-conical in the present drawings but it will be understood that it may be formed as a truncated pyramid or of other configuration. particularly adapted to the structure which .it is desired to ventilate. The upper end 8 of the member 4: is provided with the cap 9 secured therein and extending thereabove. The cap 9 carries an auxiliary shield 10 which extends down over and is spaced at distance from the conical member 4i. The cap 9 projects down within the stationary conical member and is provided with the pulley ll rotatably secured thereto and over which extends the flexible element or rope 12. The movable member 13 in the present drawings, frusto-conical in outline, is positioned upon and adapted to close the openings of the stationary conical member 4:. The movable member 13 is raised and lowered and thus the area of opening of the ventilator may be adjusted. The movable member 13 extends up beneath the shield 10 so that there will be no danger of rain or sleet driving between the stationary and movable members. The stationary member is provided with the diametrically alined openings 14 extending therethrough and which openings are provided with their line of axis substantially parallel with the axis of the conical member 4. Extending through the said openings 14: and rigidly secured to the movable member 13 is the rod 15 which is bent into W-shape, with the central upstanding loop thereof substantially central of the ventilator and to which the flexible element 12 is secured. The upstanding legs 16 of the W-shaped rod extend substantially vertical so as to extend through the openings 14 and be slidably housed thereby.
The ventilator herein disclosed is to be placed upon the roof of a building to be ventilated or other exposed place and com municatingwith the interior of the structure to be ventilated. The rope 12 extends down into the building and may be then used to adjust the ventilator to the desired opening. \Vhen the extending end of the rope is drawn downwardly, the remote end raises the W-shaped rod 15 and the upward move ments of which are guided by the openings 14 and which limit said movements to a substantially vertical plane. Thus when the rod is aised the movable member 13 will members, the movable member will move upwardly and therefore outwardly with respect to the stationary member. Thus in addition to the direct exposing of theopenings' 7, the openings will communicate with the passa e or chamber formed between the movable and stationary members. Thus ventilation may be had without exposing any of the openings which is of particular advantage during inclement weather.
The various parts may be so designed that the openings will not at any time be exposed or the design may be such that all of the openin s may be exposed if it be so desired. v
The flexible element is to be secured at its lower extremity to hold the movable memher at any adjusted and desired height and when released allows the movable memberto gravitate to its lowered position for the closing of the ventilator.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim is 1. A ventilator comprising a stationary tapering member provided with a plurality of openings ext-ending through the side walls thereof, a cap secured to the upper extremity thereof, a movable tapering member fitting over said stationary member and when in contact therewith closing said openings, guiding means secured to the movable member slidablyengaging the stationary member, and means engaging said guiding means adapted to raise the movable member out-of contact with the stationary member for the exposing of said opening.
2. A ventilator comprising an inner stationary upwardly tapering member provided with a plurality of apertures extending through the side walls thereof, a cap secured to the upper extremity of said memher and extending downwardly therein, a
iexible element slidably engaging said cap, an outer movable member tapering in an upward direction extending over andadapted to close the said openings, :a shield carried by said cap, the side walls thereof extending substantially parallel to and embracing therebeneath the side walls of the stationary and movable members, ,and means engaging the said movable member forthe raising thereof and adapted to guide the movable member for the opening and closing of the said openings.
3. A ventilator comprising a stationary upwardly tapering member provided with a plurality of apertures extending through the side walls thereof, a movable upwardly tapering member extending over and adapted to close the said openings, a shield carried by and spaced a distance from the said stationary member and secured thereto at the topthereof, said shield extending down over the upper portion of the movable member and adapted to house the same therein, a rod extending through openings provided in the side walls of the stationary member and rigidly secured to the said movable member, and flexible means engaging the said rod adapted to move the same upwardly to raise said movable member above and out provided in the side walls of the stationary frusto conical members, said stationary member rovided withvertical openings extendingtherethrough, arod provided with vertically extending legs slidably housed within the said openings and rigidly .secured to the outer frusto-conical movable member, a flexible element slidably engaging the cap with one extremity thereof secured to the said rod for the raising and lowering of the movable memberfor the opening and closing of the openings in the walls of the statienary frusto-conical member.
