SELF-ACTING AIR-INLET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 721,853, dated March 3, 1903. Application filed October 28,1901. Renewed September 17J 1902. Serial No. 123,721. (No model.)

Be it known that I, VALENTINE G. BAUER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Self-Acting Air-Inlet, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to automatic valves for admitting air to sewer-traps and for analogous purposes and constructed and arranged to be closed automatically, thus preventing the slightest escape or outcurrent from the pipe connected therewith, and to open'whenever a vacuum-pressuretakes place therein, thereby securing an incurrent of air and ventilation of the said pipe and avoiding the retention of deadly gases in the plumbing-fixtures of a building; and it has for its object the provision of a device of the kind set forth simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and which operates automatically and efficiently in use.
To attain the desired end, this my invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and operation of parts herein set forth.
In order to enable my invention to be fully understood, I will proceed to explain the same by reference to the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, in
which Figure 1 represents a vertical cross-section of a self-acting air-inlet constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, showing a portion of the hood cut away; and Fig. 3 is a View in section of another air-inlet constructed according to my invention.

I have found itdesirable to construct a selfacting air-inlet which may be set level or on a horizontal part of a fresh-air pipe or otherwise at will, the same being constructed and arranged to act equally well in'any position and to be attached to any house drain or soil pipe between the intercepting-trap and the connections to the building and also to be readily inspected or removed without injury, and I have therefore constructed according to myv invention an organization of the class described embodying the preferred construction of parts and their mutual relationship, combination, arrangement, and organization in a composite body orstructure, as hereinafter described.
Referring particularly to the drawings, A denotes the preferably circular sleeve or shell 'of my inlet constructed and arranged to fit and to be leaded and packed in a T of standard make (not shown) in the usual manner. The upper part of the sleeve or shell A is ordinarily enlarged and is provided adjacent to the top thereof with a preferably enlarged or projecting portion A and also with supporting devices, as three horizontal lugs a. A ring or collar B, which sets on the top of the shell A, is also ordinarily provided with three horizontal lugs 12, constructed and arranged to register with the lugs a and to be secured thereto, as by screws 1). The contacting faces of the shell A and the collar B are preferably plate 0 therebetween in an air-tight relation, which plate (3 may be constructed of any suitable material and is provided with a central opening surrounded by a beveled edge 0', forming a valve-seat. The collar B is also preferably provided with three vertical ribs or posts b upon the tops of which rest screws 61, which serve to support the hood E.
My valve consists, preferably, of a copper disk F of concavo-convex or dish shape and counterbalanced so as to rest against the valve-seat 0, formed in the top of the plate G, although any other form of valve may be substituted therefor.
My counterbalancing means consists of .an eccentrically-mounted weight G and adjusting-screw g or a spring G having adjustingscrew 9 This counterbalancing means is secured in an adjustable relation near the end of a-rod f, which serves to support the valve F, and is provided with a transverse bar f sustained by pointed screws h, located in the posts I-I, depending from the, plate 0.
It is manifest that various omissions of some particulars could be made without materially afiecting the essential features of my shouldered in order to hold the transverse invention or the operation of theremaining IOO Obviously the elements of the structure described may be located at an angle to the plane in which they are shown. I accordingly use the words horizontal, vertical, and the like in a relative sense.
In operation my counterbalance may be adjusted so that my sleeve or shell A may be held in a vertical, horizontal, or intermediate position, and the said valve will open and close automatically in order to prevent the escape of sewer-gas, &c., and to secure when opened temporarily by a downt-ake of fresh air the proper ventilation of the plumbing system of the building.
My valve is very sensitive to internal pressure on account of its shape, being flexible or yielding on account of being constructed of thin metal, and also serves in connection with the beveled seat 0 to form an air-tight joint with very little pressure. By moving the eccentrically-mounted weight G around the rodfit is obvious that the same may be adjusted so as to hold the valve F against the seat 0'.
As it is evident that many changes in the construct-ion, form, proportion, and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that such changes and elquivalents may be substituted therefor, and t lat What I claim as my invention is- 1. In a fresh-air inlet,the combination with a sleeve or shell having a flange provided interiorly with a shoulder, and a rim or collar located thereon and also provided interiorly with a shoulder, and provided with vertical posts or ribs, and an intermediate transverse plate to engage said shoulders and provided with a beveled valve-seat, of a flexible or yielding thin-metal valve of concavo-convex or dish shape, and means for holding the valve to the seat consisting of an eccentrically-mounted overbalancing device, and also of a hood supported by screws resting upon said posts.
2. In a fresh-air inlet, the combination with a sleeve or shell, and with an interior transverse plate forming a valve-seat, of a valve of concavo-convex or dish shape, and means for holding the valve to the seat consisting of an eccentrically-mounted overbalancing device secured near the end of a rod supporting the valve from below, and provided with a transverse bar sustained by pointed screws located in posts depending from the said interior transverse plate.
