This invention relates to improvements in neckties, and has for its primary object to provide an improved form of tie that is adapted to be firmly secured in position to the neckband or collar of the wearer. I-Ieretofore, various means have been employed to hold neckties in position, and when the ties are so constructed in themselves as to accomplish this purpose without the necessity of using extraneous attachments, they have been commonly constructed so as to attach themselves to the neckband or collar in such a manner that it has been necessary to vary the sizes of the neckties in order to suit the different sizes of neckbands or collars. One of the special features of the invention is to provide improved means in a tie which will adapt the same to be secured to a neckband or collar of any desired size, thus obviating the necessity of providing ties to be carried in stock for each size of collar or neckband.

A further object of the invention is to provide improved means for firmly securing` a tie to the collar or neckband of the wearer and at the same time allow the tie to have a certain range of adjustment after being attached to the collar or neckband for convenience in tying.

To the attainment of these ends and the accomplishment of other new and useful objects hereinafter referred to, the invent-ion consists in the features of novelty set forth in the specification, pointed out more particularly in the claim, as shown in the accompanying drawings illustrating an exemplication of the invention.

In the said drawings- Figure 1 is a view of a tie embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the manner of attaching the form of tie appearing in Fig. 1 to the shirtband and collar. Fig. 3 illustrates a modified form of the invention. Fig. 4- illustrates a further modificationy of the invention, and Fig. 5 is a rear perspective view showing the manner of attachment of the tie illustrated in Fig. 4 to the shirtband or collar.

10 is a strip of flexible material of which the body of the tie is formed, to which the invention is applied, consisting of a narrow strip of flexible' materialll secured at its ends to the body of the tie and adapted for insertion over the collarv button which secures the back Vor rear side of the collar to the shirtband, this strip 11 being attached tothe body 10 of the tie only at its ends,

and is adapted for insertion over the collar button. It is preferably placed in position as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings by putting it over the button before the collar is inserted on the button. This method of attachment securely adjusts the tiein position at the back and 'holds it down firmly in its adjusted position when the tie is tightened around the collar. This flexible strip 11 may be of any convenient length, and is preferably of sufficient length to allow considerable latitude Lof adjustment of the tie, which is easily accomplished by the sliding of the strip 11 over the shank of the button, and although this strip be made as long as one-third the entire 'circumference of the collar, or more, it will be found that when the tie istightened, tension will be placed upon the strip 11, which will draw the tie toward the bottom edge of the collar.

For securing the tie in position at the front of the collar, the elastic loop 12 isprovided, and like the member 11, is secured to the tie on the inside, or the side adapted to be placed next the collar, and also, like the member 11, it is preferred that the loop 12 be placed in position over the shank of the collar button Vbefore the lapped front ends of the collar are placed in position on the button. The loop 12, like the member 11, may be of any suitable flexible material, and it is found desirable also under some conditions to make it of elastic material and of sufiicient length to permit of a certain amount of adjustment of the tie in relation to the collar, particularly during the operation of tying.

Another convenient form for use on the front of the collar, or over the front collar button is illustrated in F ig. 4f, in which the invention is shown applied to a four-in-hand tie, the body of which is indicated bythe reference character 13, and having the flexible member 11, as in Fig. 1, for securing the same to the collar button at the rear, a similar flexible member 14 serving for insertion over the front collar button by putting it over the button before the lapped ends of the collar are buttoned. This modified form of loop 14: for the front button allows a greater latitude of adjustment than may ordinarily be secured by using the loop 12, and is particularly desirablek in attaching the invention to four-in-hand ties.

Another desirable feature resulting from the use of the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 4 and 5 is due to the fact that when the parts are properly arranged andV of sufcient length,y for example, in length each about one-fourth of the total circumference of the collar, it is possible to arrange the tie so that it will be rmly held down in position around the bottom edge of the collar at four points about equally spaced around the collar as indicated at 14a, 14:1 and 11, 11b, Fig. 5.

In the modified form of the invention illustrated in Fig. 3, the flat flexible strip 11 for holding` the tie down at the rear is replaced by a loop 15 of flexible material similar to the loop 12, and like the loop 12 and the flexible strip 11, it is preferred that this be inserted over the collar button before the collar is placed thereon in position. The loop 15, like the loop 12, may be made of elastic flexible material, thus permitting a greater range of adjustment of the tie after its retaining loops are placed in position over the collar button.

In order that the invention might be understood, the details of the preferred embodiment of the same have been specifically described, but it will be apparent that many modifications in ties embodying the inven tion may be made by those skilled in the artwithout departing from the purpose and spirit of the invention, but

What I claim is:

As an article ofV manufacture, a necktie provided with a collar encircling portion, and a flexible member adapted for insertion over the shank of a collar button, said flexible member being secured to the collar encircling portion of the tie at its ends and' beingjfree from the tie between said ends whereby the tie may be adjusted by slidingthe'flexible member over the shank of the collar button, the said flexible member being' of suflicient length to permit the adjustment of the tie on collars of various sizes, andthe points of securement of the ends of the flexible member being separated onthe collar encircling portion of the tie a distance approximately equal to the length of the flexible member.
