EXTINGUISHER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AMMoN D. SWOGER, a resident of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have in vented a new and useful Improvement in Extinguishers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descripti on thereof.
My invention relates to extinguishing devices in general and more particularly to devices for use in extinguishing candles and the like.
Its object is to provide a device which can be readily and conveniently used for snufiing out candles, especially where, as in Christmas trees or churches, they are at a height or in an inaccessible location.
In consists, generally stated, in the combination with a suitable handle or staff, of two extinguishing members provided with snuffing faces, a spring attached to one of said members to hold them normally separated, and means for bringing them into snufling contact.
It also consists in certain other improvements hereinafter more particularly set forth and described.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side view illustrating a convenient form of my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed perspective view showing more clearly the operating parts of my invention; Fig. 3 is a like view illustrating a modification; and F 4: is a detail view of my adjustable staff.
The device is shown as carried by the extensible staff 1 which is conveniently provided with the hinge 2 and hook 3 so that it can be folded up and conveniently packed when not in use, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 1. The snufling member 4 is shown fixed to the stafi' 1 and is provided with the snuffing face 5. This snuffing face 5 is preferably substantially fiat so as to register flush with the like fiat snufling face 7 of the pivoted snufling member 6. The member 6 is pivoted around the stud or pivot 8 on the stafi 1. The snufling faces 5 and 7 are preferably arranged parallel to the axis of the pivot 8, as shown. The snufling member 6 has also the arm 9. The spring 13 is attached at 14 to the staff 1 and at 15 to the arm 9 of the member 6, and extends around the pivot 8, being preferably wound or twisted'around it, as shown in Fig. 2. This spring 13 holds the members 41 and 6 normally apart.

Attached to the arm is the wire or cord 10 which is shown in Fig. 1 as extending through brads 11 along the staff 1 and provided with the ring 12 as a convenient gripping means for actuating the snufiing member 6 into contact with the snuifing face 5 of the member 4. It will be seen that the members 4 and 6 are held normally at an open angle by the spring 13, and may be conveniently brought into snuffing contact by the wire 10. These members are preferably constructed of light metal, and the staff may be made of wood or other light material so that the whole device is convenient and easy to handle when snufling a candle at aheight or in an inaccessible place. The staff 1 is shown as provided with the wax torch 16 sliding in the guides 17 attached to the staff. It thus serves as a con venient means for lighting candles as well as snufling them.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 3 the snufling members 18 and 19 are each pivotally connected to the stud 19 and their snufiing faces 20 and 21 are held normally out of contact by the bow spring 22 attached to the lugs 23 and 2 1 on the members 18 and 19. Each of the members 18 and 19 is connected by the branch cords 25 and 26 respectively to the cord 27. The operation of this modification is analogous to that of the preferred form of the device of my invention, except that as there is no fixed member like the member a it is not quite so easy to bring the device into operative position at the wick of a candle.
I What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character specified,
the combination with a suitable staff, of two members provided with snutfmg faces, a spring attached to one of said members to hold them normally separated, and means for bringing said members into snuffing con tact.
2. In a device of the character specified, the combination with a suitable staff, of two snufling members provided with flat faces substantially parallel when in contact, means for holding said members normally separated, and means for bringing said members into snuffing contact.
3. In a device of the character specified, the combination with a suitable staff, of two members provided with snufling faces, one of said members being rigidly attached to the staff and the other pivoted thereto, a spring attached to said pivoted member to hold the faces normally separated, and means for bringing said members into snuffing contact.
4. In a device of the character specified, the combination with a suitable staff, of two members provided with snufling faces, a spring attached to one of said members to hold them normally separated, and a wire extending along said staff to bring said members into snuifing contact.
5. In a device of the character specified, the combination with a suitable staff, of two members provided with flat snufiing faces, one of said members being rigidly attached to the staff and the other pivoted thereto, a spring attached to said pivoted member to hold the faces normally separated, and means for bringing said members into snuffing contact.
6. In a device of the character specified, the combination with a suitable staff, of two members provided with fiat snufiing faces, one of said members being rigidly attached to the staff and the other pivoted thereto, a spring attached to said pivoted member to hold the faces normally separated, and a wire extending along said staff and adapted to bring said members into snuffing contact.
7. In a device of the character specified, the combination with a suitable staff, of a member fixed thereto and provided with snufiing means, a pivot on said staff, a member rotatable on said pivot provided with snufling means and with an arm extension, a spring attached to said staff and connected around said pivot to said extension on said rotatable member, and drawing means connected to said arm to rotate said member into snufiing contact with said fixed member.
8. In a device of the character specified, the combination with a suitable staff, of a member fixed thereto and provided with a flat snufiing face, a pivot on said staff, a member pivoted thereto and provided with a fiat snuffing face and an arm, a spring atta'ched to said staff and wound around said pivot to connect to said arm, and means connected to said arm to actuate said pivoted member into snuffing contact with said fixed member.
9. In a device of the character specified, the combination with a suitable staff, of a member fixed thereto and provided with a flat snuffing face, a pivot on said staff, a member pivoted thereto and provided with a fiat snufiing face and an arm, a spring attached to said staff and wound around said pivot to connect to said arm, and a wire connected to said arm and extending along said staff and adapted to actuate said pivoted member into snuffing contact.
10. In a device of the character specified, the combination with a suitable staff, of two members provided with snuffing faces, a spring attached to one of said members to hold them normally separated, a wire extending along said staff to bring said members into snufiing contact, and a torch attached to said staff.
