' EXTINGUIsHEE EOE LAMP-BURNERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. '7, 1913.y
Application filed September 28, 1911. Serial No. 651,788.
Toall 'wh-0m t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE I. GEHEBER, a` citizen of the United States, residing at Ransom, in the county of La Salle and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Extinguishers for Lamp- Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This-invention relates to extinguishers for lamp burners, the object of the invention being to provide a movably mounted device which may be disposed in such a position with respect to the wick of the burner as will permit of its being moved thereagainst tol effectively extinguish the flame;
Another object of the invention is `to provide a device of this character that can be j substantially wholly constructed from a singlelength of metal so as to reduce its cost of manufacture to a minimum.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the application of the extinguisher to a lamp. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the movable extinguishingmember showing the manner of bending the wire before the initial flattening of rportions thereof to form the extinguishing surface.
The extinguisher is designed for attach-y ment to such a well known form of lamp burner as the one shown at A in Fig. 1 of the drawing. A clamp 1 removably fitted to the burner below the wick. This clamp is provided with spaced ears 2having bearing openings 8 therein for' a purpose to be f hereinafter described. The extinguishing member l is constructed vpreferably fromV a single length of wire which is bent upon litself to provide the spaced legs 5, the lateral f trunnions 6 and 6 and the head 7 This head includes a long arm Sand the` short branch arms 9. The head is offset from the legs 5 so that the heads 7 can be effectively brought into contact with the burning surface of the lamp wick. After the wire forming the extinguishing member l has been bent as just described the portions 8 and 9 of the head 7 are flattened, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, thereby producing an effective continuous extinguishing surface.
The trunnions 6 and of the extinguishing member are adaptedto beextended into the opening 3 in .theclampklr so that the Copies of this patent may be obtained for extinguishing member can be freely rocked toward and away from the wick. After the trunnions have been extended in the opening as described, the trunnion 6 is bent at fone end to provide a small lever 10. An eye 11 is made in the arm and attached in the eye is the upper end o-f a flexible connection such as the chain 12. This chain is extended through the base of the burner and it is provided with a small knob 13 which may be grasped by the hand 'when it isv desired to manipulate the same for the purpose rocking the extinguishing member. A spring 14 issecured at one end to the burner. The other end of the spring is looped around one of the legs 5 of the extinguishing member. Under the tension of the spring the extinguishing member will be held in an open position. l
The provision of the device herein' described is such that it will entirely 'obviate the necessity of removing the lamp chimney and extinguishing the flame by blowing the same.' When it is desiredfto extinguish the same by the device employed herein the flexible member 12 is pulledy downwardlyof.v
This rocks.` the extinguishing member and throws the head 7 thereof over the flame so as to smo-ther the same as will be understood.
' I claim: Y
In combination with a burner, of an ex-v tinguisher therefor, said extinguisher comprisinga single strand of wire bent uponk itself at its medial portion to form an elongated head including a long arm and short branch arms, said branch arms being bent in parallel relation to the said long esvk arm', and the terminals of said branch arms terminating outwardly and downwardly in. a pair of relatively spaced bowed legs, the' terminals of said vlegs extending laterally and at right. angles thereto forming truna spring connected with one ofthe bowed legs for holding the extinguisher normally open, one of saidv trunnions being bent to provide an upwardly and forwardly extending lever formed at its terminal portion with an eye, and meansA connected with the eye to manipulate said extinguisher..
nions,
In testimony whereof I affix my signature e i in presence of two witnesses. y
