JOHAN WM. KYNAST, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
CANDLE HOLDER ND EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 601,754, dated April 5, 1898.
' Application led T U11@ 1.0, 1397i T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WILLIAM KYNAST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Candle Holders and Extinguishers, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to candle holders and extinguishers for use in connection with Christmas trees and for similar purposes; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and ,operation and which is also comparatively inexpensive.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved candle holder and extinguisher; Fig. 2, a side view thereof; and Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2, showing a modified form of construction.
In the drawings forming part of this speciication the separate parts of my improvement are designated by the same. numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the practice of my invention I provide a device of the. class herein speciied, which consists of a plate or disk 5, which is provided with a wire, rod, or arm 6, which is secured centrally of the bottom of said plate or disk, or said rod or arm may be secured to said plate or disk in any desired manner, and the opposite end thereof is provided with a loop or hook 7, the end of which is provided with a backwardlydirected prong 8, and by means of Isaid loop or hook and said prong the device may be connected with a part of a Christmas tree or with any similar support or holder, as shown at 9, sai'd'support or holder being shown in dotted lines.
The disk or plate 5 is provided centrally of the upper side thereof with a semicircular jaw 10, which is secured thereto in any desired manner and which is provided with a projecting arm 11, to which is hinged'at 12 a .similar arm 13, which is provided with a jaw 14, which is similar in form to the jaw 10 of the arm 11, and the arms 11 and 13 are provided with similar thumb-pieces or heads 15, and hinged to Serial No. 640,169. (No model.)
the arm 13, between the hinge thereof at 12 and the jaw 14, is a spring-operated arm 16, which is provided with an angular extension 17, which is provided with a circular extinguisher 18, andthe spring-hinge of the arm 16 at 19 is designed to throw the extinguisher 18 over the jaws 10 and 14, and the spring-hinge at 13 is so formed as to normally hold the jaws 10 and 14 in the closed position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and between said jaws 10 and 14 is placed a candle 20, and in the normal position of the parts the extinguisher 18 presses on the side of the candle, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the following statement thereof. The outer end of the arm 16 is also provided with a thumb-piece 21, and when the candle is in position for use the parts of the holder and the extinguisher occupy the position shown in said Figs. 1 and 2, and when the candle has dropped down to the top of the jaws lO and 14, which constitute the holder proper, the extinguisher-plate is thrown over the top thereof and extinguishes the flame,
as will be readily understood.
In Fig. 3'I have shown a modification in which the rod or arm 6 is provided with a pointed end 22,which is preferably screw-threaded,
and in this form of construction the arm 16 is hinged to the arm 13 at 23, and between the arm 16 and the arm 13 is placed a spring 24, and the extinguisher-plate 18 projects upwardly and rests against the side of the candle, and the operation of the spring 24 is to throw the extinguisher-plate down over the wick or flame when the candle has been consumed down to or approximately to the holder, consisting of the jaws 10 and 14.
The jaws 10 and 14 together form a tubular holder, as clearly shown in the drawings, into which the candle is inserted, and it will thus be seen that I accomplish the object of my invention by means of a device which is simple in construction and operation and perfectly adapted to accomplish the result for which it is intended, while being also comparatively inexpensive. v
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- IOO l. A combination candle holder and extinguisher consisting of a disk or plate, an arm or rod connected therewith and provided at its end with means for securing it to a support, said disk or plate being provided with two semicircular jaws each of which is provided with an arln one of which is rigidly secured to said plate, the arm of the other being movable and being connected with the rigid jaw by a spring-hinge and means for operating said movable arm, another spring-operated arm pivotally connected with one of said jaws and provided with an extinguishing-plate adapted to be held to one side of said jaws by a candle which is inserted therein, and being adapted also to be projected over said jaws when the candle is consumed to a predetermined point, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. Acombination candle holder and extinguisher, consisting of a disk or plate, an arm or rod connected therewith and provided atits end with means for securing it to a support, said disk or plate being provided with two semicireular jaws, each of Vwhich is provided with an arm, one of said arms being rigidly secured to said plate and the other arm being movable and being connected with the rigid arm by a spring-hinge and means for operating said movable arm, another spring-operated arm pivotally connected with one of said jaws and provided with an extinguishingplate adapted to be held out of engagement with the upper edge of said jaws by a candle which is inserted therein, and being adapted also to be projected over said jaws when the candle is consumed to a predetermined point, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribingwitnesses, this 5th day 4o of June, 1897.
