To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE H. MOORE, of Boston, in the county of Suiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to devices for tem` porarily holding independent sheets of paper, the device including a cover composed of side members and a back member with which the side members are flexibly connected, and means carried by the cover for detachably engaging perforated sheets and holding` the said sheets in the form of a pack between the side members of the cover. The sheet-engaging means include members usually of hooked form movably connected with the cover and projecting from the inner surface thereof, keepers being provided for the free ends of the movable hooks, so that they may be secured to the cover in position to confine the pack of sheets, and displaced to permit the application and removal of the sheets. The sheetengaging' members or hooks project to a considerable extent from the inner surface of the cover.

Heretofore, the construction has been such that when the cover is closed, the approach of the side members toward each other is limited by the sheet-engaging means, so that when a relatively thin pack of sheets is confined, the side members of the cover cannot lie parallel with each other in contact with both sides of the pack, one side member being necessarily separated at its inner edge from the pack by the portions of the sheetengaging means.

My invention has for its object to enable the side members of the cover of a temporary binder to lie parallel with each other on the opposite side of the pack of sheets, regardless of the thickness of the pack, or of the form of the sheet-engaging means.

The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this speciiication,-Figure 1 represents a plan view of a temporary binder embodying my invention, the cover being opened and the binder empty. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged section on line 2 2 of F ig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 represent sectional views, each showing the cover closed upon a pack of. sheets. E ig. 5 represents a section on line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 represents a sectional view of a modification.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings,12 and 13 represent the side members of the cover portion of a temporary binder, these being preferably relatively stift' and composed of any suitable material, such as thick paper-board covered if desired with cloth or other material which imparts the desired finish.

14 represents the back member which is liexibly connected with the side members l2 and 13, and is preferably of flexible construction. As here shown, the back member is composed of two layers of cloth suitably cemented together and to the body portions of the side members, the outer layer being preferably integral with the cloth covering applied to the outer sides of the side members.

The construction and mode of connection of the members of the cover constitutes no part of my invention, and may be .variously modiiied.

The cover is provided with one or more, and preferably two sheet-engaging members 15, which are movably connected with the cover, and are adapted to be engaged with keepers attached to the cover, the sheet-engaging members when engaged with said keepers being held in their sheet-confining position, and being movable from said position, when disengaged from the keepers, to assume a position such as that shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, to permit the application and removal of perforated sheets 16.

The sheet-engaging members, the means for movably connecting the same with the cover, and the keepers for the swinging ends of the sheet-engaging members are preferably as shown in Letters Patent of the United States, N o. 905,559, granted to me December 1, 1908, the sheet-engaging members being arched arms or hooks connected by a rod or rock-shaft 17, the latter being confined by a socket 18 formed on one edge of a sheet metal plate 19, which is attached by eyelet-shaped rivets 20 to the cover. The opposite edge of the plate 19 is provided with a boss 21 having oriiices 22 adapted to receive the swinging ends of the hooks 15, each hook having a shoulder 23 adapted to snap into engagement with one end of the corresponding slot 22.

In my above mentioned prior patent, the

sheet-engaging members were carried wholly by the back member of the cover, the plate 19 being riveted to said back member at points between the side members, so that when the cover is closed, the inner edges of its side members are necessarily separated by a space equal to the entire width of the plate 19. rlhe thickness of the back portion of the closed cover is therefore invariable, whether the pack of sheets be relatively thick: or thin. vWhen the pack is thin, one of the side members of the cover is necessarily inclined relatively to the adjacent side of the pack.

ln carrying out my present invention, secure the sheet-engaging means wholly to the side member 12 of the cover, and provide the side member 13 with apertures 2st formed to register with and receive the sheet-engaging members or hooks 15 when the cover is closed. rlhis construction permits the side members of the cover to lie parallel with each other and with the sides of the pack of sheets 16, whether said pack be relatively thin, as shown in Fig. 3, or relatively thick, as shown in Fig. 4:, so that when the cover is closed, its side members confine all parts of the pack of sheets, instead of leaving a space between one side of the pack and one of the side members of the cover, as has been necessary heretofore.

The apertures 24 are preferably narrow elongated slots, and are preferably formed by correspondingly shaped eyelets 25 inserted in slots cut in the cover member 13.

Each sheet-securing member 15 is permanently mounted on or connected to the side member 12 of the cover, at 17, and is separably connected at its other end by its hooked engagement with the boss 21. rlhe location of the separable connection is, as will be seen, at a point between the permanent connection 17 and the intermediate back member of the cover. rfherefore, when sheets are to be inserted or removed, those which are already in place on the cover member 12, or are to be left there, are not disturbed by the addition of lsheets or the removal of some top sheets.

The sheet-engaging members may be of any other suitable form and construction, and may be connected with the cover' in any other suitable way without departing from the spirit of my invention.

lTi/'hile the back member of the eover is preferably flexible to permit the side members to adjust themselves to packs of different thickness, l do not limit myself to a cover having a Aliexible back member. ln Fig. G I show a back member 1st. of relatively stit'f construction, flexibly connected with the side members. This embodiment of my invention makes clear the fact that the width of the back member is independent of the width of the arches formed by the hooks 15, and that said arches may be considerably wider than the back member, so that the distance between the inn r edges of the

12, 13, when the cover is closed, may be` considerably less than the width of the arches, instead of being greater than said width, as has been necessary heretofore.

l claim:

1. A temporary binder comprising a cover composed of side members, and an intermediate back member tieXibly connected therewith, and a sheet-securing arm adjacent the back member and having one end permanently and the other end separably connected with one of the side members and projecting from the inner surface thereof, the separable connection being at a point between the permanent connection and the intermediate back member of the cover, the other side member of the cover being provided with an aperture adapted to receive the sheet-securing member when the cover is closed, whereby the side members are adapted to lie parallel with each other in contact with an interposed pack of sheets.

2. Av temporary binder comprising a cover composed of side members, and an intermediate back member flexibly connected therewith, and sheet-engaging means including` a plurality of hooks permanently and movably mounted on one of the side members, and rigid keepers therefor' carried by the same side member between the permanent connection of the hooks and the back member, said hooks projecting from the inner side of said member adjacent the back member, the other side member being provided with apertures adapted to receive said hooks when the cover is closed.

A temporary binder comprising a cover composed of side members and an intermediate back member flexibly connected therewith, and sheet-securing means connected wholly with one of the side members, and including a sheet-engaging member project.- ing therefrtnn adjacent the intermediate back member, the back member being movable independently of the sheet-securing means, and the other side member being provided with an aperture adapted to receive the sheet-engaging member when the cover is closed, one end of the sheet-engaging member being permanently connected to its supporting side member and the other end being separably connected to said side member between the permanent. connection and the back member of the cover.
