JOHN ZANDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ACETYLENE .APPARATUS MANU- 'i FACTURING C0., OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINIA.
Specification of Letters Patent.
:Patentes Nov. is, i909.
Application filed March 21, 1907. Serial No. 363,584.
To all 'u1/ ami it may concer/L:
Be it known that I, JOHN Zanonn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ot' Cook and State of illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in- Acetylene-Generators, of which the following is a specilicat'ion.
This generator is provided with a single ralvcanechanisin for venting the generating chamber When water is supplied to or residuuni is withdrawn therefrom.
eterring to the accompanying ings: Figure 1 is aside elevation ot' the generator', holder and piping; Fig. 2 is a front elevation ot' the valve; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the yalve; lig. t is an axial section of the valve-plug; 5 is a Vertr cal axial section ot' the mire-casino' showing draw- 7 'he plug in elevation; and Fig. Gbis a vertical axial section of the valve, the plug be ing shown .in a position at right angles to that ot' Fig. o.
The generator' illustrated is of the Wellltnowu type, comprising an upper chamber 1 for holding and feeding carbid and a lower chamber Q for holding water and generating the gas. A horizontal valve 3 communicates with the generating chamber near its base and the casing oif this Valve has openings receiving the water-supply pipe 4, a ventpipe 5 leading trom the 'upper part ot the chamber, and a vcnt-i'iipe 'which is connected to the us. holder rent-pipe (i. ',ihe holder, also shouf'n of conventional type, comprises a waterrhainber 7, bell 8, sealpan t?, and service pipe 1t) having .Valve 11 and liber l2. ."L gas-delivery pige 13 leads from the generatin to the holder.
'lhe valve 3 eon'ipriscs a tubular casing the rear enit 15 of which is threaded and screwed' through the side wall .ot the gen-- erating chamber. This casing has an upper port 1o receiving the Watensupply pipe 1L and a lower port 17 for -the discharge ot residunin, which may receive a pipe leading to a sewer? The lcasing also has, at its front end, opposite ports '18, 15%' which receive the vent-pipes 5, 5. The rear end of the plug 19 has a chamber Q0, communieating by the opening Q0' and the threaded neckl ot' the casing with thc generating chamber. The side Wall of chamber 20 has a rectangular aperture 21 which, by rotation ot' the plug,
Vmay be caused to register either with the inlet-port 16 or the outlet-port 17 or to be t closed by the valve-casing. The front end ot the valve-plug has a chamber 22 the side walls of which have oppositely arranged vent-apertures 23, 23', adapted in two positions to register with the ports 18, 18', and in other positions to be closed by the Valve zaslng.
Oppositely arranged draiirholes 24, 24', dianietrically at right angles to the apertures 23. 23', open reiiri\fz11dl y and outwardly 25, which communicates with thev outlet port 17. The valve-plug has a handle 2G, secured on a. squared portion 2T at -its front end. lhe valve-plug is forced to its seat in the casing by a closing piece QS, screwed to the t'anged trout. end of the 'casing This piece has lugs 25.), 29', projecting perlpherally at the ends ot its horizontal diameter. These lugs are arranged in the path ot a stop 30 ivhich projects rearwardiy from the handle 2o and liinit the rotation ot the Valve-plug to a seinicircular arc.
Then the valve-handle 26' is in the position Ishown in Figs. 1, 2, 3 and the valveplng is in the position shown in Fig. 5, the four ports of the. ValVe-casingare closed.
til its lug 30 strikes the stop 29', the plug aperture i211 is brought' into register with the upper portI '1G and the plug-apertures 23, 23 i into register with the ports 18', 1S, as shown in Fig. o. The generating chamber is thus opened at the base for the introduction oit water through the supply-pipe et and is vented at Ythc top through the pipes 5, 5', G and the plug-apertures 23, 93'. handle 21' is rotated vto the left until the lug 3() strikes the stop 29, the plug-aperture 21 is brought into register with the`p01't 17 and the apertures 23, Q3 with the Vent-ports 18, 18', thus permitting the escape of re siduuin from the bottoni of the generating chamber and the entrance'ot air through the pipes G, 5',
Tie drain-holes 91'-, of the valve-plug being arranged in .fr position diaznetrically at right'y anglesV to that of'apert'ures Q3, Q3'. one ot these holes is in position to drain any condensed water troni the vent-pipes when the plug is rotated either to the right or left, one hole then being in its lowermost position as shown in Fig. 6.
I claim: 1. A gas generator comprising a generatfrom the chamber Q2 into an annular groove lWhen the handle is rotated to the right un- `When the ing chamber having a vent-pipe, a liquidinlet and a flush-out, and unitary means for (l) simultaneously opening or closing both the liquid-inlet and the vent-pipe or (Q) simultaneously opening or closing both the Hash-oat and the vent-pipe.

4. A gas generator comprising-a generating chamber having an opening controlledv ing chamber having an opening controlled by a Valve, the casing of said valve having a liquid-inlet port, a titisli-Out port and two vent-ports7 a supply-pipe connectedto said liquid-inlet port, a chamber-vent pipe c0nnected to one vent-pmt7 and a valve-plug having one passage arranged to. connect either the liquid-inlet' port or the Hush-out' port and the generating chamber, and an- 'other passage arranged to connect the ventports.
t3. A generator comprising a generating chamber having an opening controlled hy a \'alve, the casing of said `valve having` a liquid-inlet port, a Hush-outl port and two vent'ports, a supply-pipe connectedl to said liquid-inlet port, a chamber-vent pipe conpassage arranged to connect the vent-ports.
and a drain-hole leading from the second passage.
7. A gas generator eoinpi'isingqi generating chamber having ali opening controlled by a valve, the casing of said valve having a liquid-inlet port, a flash-out port and two vent-ports, a sn'iply-pipe connected to said liquid-inlet port, a chamber-vent pipe connected to one vent-port, and a valve-plug having one passage arranged to connect either the liquid-niiet port or the flush-ont portand the generating chamber7 another passage arranged to connect the vent-ports, and opposite drain-holes leading from the. second passage.
8. A gas generator comprising a generating chamber having an opening controlled by a valve, the casing of said valve having aliquid-inlet port, a flush-out port and two vent-ports, a supply-pipe connected to said liquid-inlet port, a chamber-vent pipe connected to one ventnport, and a valve-plug having one passage arranged to connect either the liquid-inlet port or the flush-oi1t port and the generating chamber, ano'ther passage arranged to connect the vent-ports, a peripheral groove opening into the flushout port, and a drain-hole or holes leading from the second passage to said groove.
9. Incombination, a gas-generating chamber having a liquid-inlet, flushoutand chambervent pipe, a holder having a service pipe and a vent-pipe, and a valve constructed to' connect either the liquid-inlet or the flush) out and the generating chamber and to connect said vent-.pipes when either the liquidinlet or flush-out' port is opened.
