FITTING FOR SYSTEMS UTILIZING HIGH PRESSTIBE.
To all whom it may concern. Be it known that I, Gnonen W. SAVAGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chester, in the county of Delaware and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Fitting for Systems Utilizing High Pressure, of which the following is a specification.
The invention, generally stated, has relation to afitting employed in systems utiliz- --ing high pressure, as for instance, gas, alr,
ticular relation to the providing of a fitting vidin steam and like systems and has more parfor use in connection with high pressure gas systems used for illuminating purposes in residences, business houses and the like.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a fitting embracing few parts, which may be economically manufac-. tured, readily assembled, positioned and set for efficient use without further regulation and which parts when so positioned shall be interlocked and sealed so that tampering with the valve and valve rod thereof by unau thorized persons cannot readily be accomplished or which in any event cannot be ac complished without the factof such tampering being brought tothe attention of an authorized agent inspecting the system to which the fitting is att'ached, thereby promaximum safetyfor the user." rther object of the invention is to provide a fitting of the above type in which the valve thereof when once positioned(except for cleaning, repairing or the like purposes) does not require regulation and which valve when so positioned abuts at its rear end against a supporting structure in order to relieve certain of the fitting parts of the effect of pressure of the medium passing through the fitting.
A further object of the present invention resides in the providing a new andnovel v form of combined valve-rod shield or cover and operating handle whereby when the shield. is in place upon the fitting the valve-v rod is protectedand completely hidden from view and whereby when such shield is detached may be, readily fitted to the valverod for operating the same.
' Other and further objects of the invention reside in the providing of a new and novel valve attachment for clearing the'valve seat of deposits and in the providing of. the fitting with a deposit or drip chamber.

The invention consists. of the improvements hereinafter described and finally claimed.
The nature, characteristic features: and scope of the invention will be fnore fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part hereof and in which Figure 1, is a new in central section of a v fitting embodying the invention, Fig. 2, 1s a view in horizontal section taken upon .the' line-22of Fig. 1, and Figs. 3a and 4, are views taken upon the lines 33, and 4-4, respectively, of Fig.1."
In, the drawings the fitting is of general cruciform configuration, see Fig. 1, and in manufacture is made up of a very small number of parts, five by actual-count, thus f insuring cheapness of, manufacture, simplicity of construction and efficiency in use.
As the parts all have screw-threaded rela-\ tion with one another the fittingmay be readily assembled. The part 10, of the fitting, is of angular construction and. embraces ahorizontal inlet connection 11, a
vsimilarly disposed extension 12, an upwardly extended outlet connection 13, and a depending extension 14, constituting a com bined expansion and depositor dripcham-i her, all of which parts are integral," These extensions and connections are arranged at at i right angles to one another. 'The inlet con-j nection 11, has extendedthereacross andintegral therewith a partition, centrally aper tured to provide a valve-seat 15.. Fitted to the extension 12, so that its forward end pr0-' jects'well into the vertical bore, of the part 10, is a one piece horizontally disposed bushing 16, provided'with ahexagonal part-17, terminating in a forwardly extended "shouL der 18, and a rearwardly extended sc'rew threaded portion 19.; Having screw threaded relation withthe bushing 16, so as'to be ice movable endwise therethrough is a valvestem 20, provided ,witha valve 21, for '00- both for opening-"and closi g theopening 1 therethrough and-for cleanslng the same of operative engagement with the 'valveiseat 15.,

The outer end of the valve-rod is squared at 25, to receive an operating device hereinafter to be described. The valve-rod is Having screw threaded relation with the part 19, of the bushing 16, and completely inclosing and hiding entirely from view the valve-rod isa shield or hood 27. The shield abuts against the part 17, of the bushing 16, and the shoulder 18, of the bushing in turn-abuts against the extension 12, of the part 10, so
that from end to end the valve-rod is completely inclosed. That part of the shield 27 which normally is adjacent the bushing end is provided with a boss 28, having formed therein'a squared opening 29, of a size for operatively engaging the squared end 25, of
the valve-rod so that the-shield may be used as an operating handle when detached from the fitting. The boss 28, has also drilled therein a small opening 30. A lug 33, formed integral with the extension 12, of the part 10, has also drilled therethrough a small opening 32. In practice a wire seal 31, is
used for sealing the shield with respect to the part 10, the wire of the seal being passed through the openings 30, and 32, whereby to remove the shield to operate the valverod, it is necessaryto break the seal. The seal 31, is usually located beneath the fitting as shown. "Thus unauthorized persons are not apt to tamper with the fitting and should they do so an authorized agent inspecting the system has knowledge of such act so that a thorough inspection follows. In practice, and speaking now particularly of the use of high pressure gas in residences, business houses and the like, the fitting parts are so constructed that when once Set, no adjustments are necessary for eflicient operation. In this connection, it may be stated that the relative position of the valve-21, to its valve seat 15,. as shown, in' the drawings is proportioned for this result. It will be noted that the bushing 16, is extended outwardly 'so that the beveled part 23, of the valve will when in closed position, forms a snug fit with respect to the opening in the valve seat 15.
What I claim is: 1 1. A fitting of the class described embracing a casing having. a relatively large inlet connection equipped with a valve seat having a contracted opening therethrough,
a detachable, valve-stem bushing projected into said casing and disposed opposite the valve-seat, an endwise movable valve-stem .carrying a valve-piece operative through said bushing for closing tlie'contracted opening, saidvaIve-pieCe being adapted to abut against the inner bushing end to maintain a normal working thoroughfare ofdetermined maximum, a detachable shield operatively connected to form a joint to prevent the escape of a medium under pressure and which shield entirely incloses the valve-stem end when the valveis in its full open position and means acting as a seal connected between said casing and said shield.
2. A fitting of the class described embracing a casing having relatively large inlet connection equipped with a valve-seat having a contracted opening therethrough, said casing beyond and below said valve-seat beingprovided with a combined expansion and deposit or drip chamber, a detachable valve stem bushingprojected into said casing and disposed opposite the valve-seat, an endwise movable valve-stem carrying a valve-piece operative through said bushing'for closing said contracted opening, said valve-piece being adapted to abut against the inner bush ing 'end to maintain a normal working thoroughfare of determined maximum, a detachable shield operatively connected to form a joint to prevent the escape of a medium under pressure, which shield entirely incloses theralve-stem and when said valve is in its full open positionv and means acting as a seal connected between said casing and saidshield.
3. 'In'a fitting of the class described the combination of a casing provided with an 10 inlet valve thoroughfare, a valve-stem equipped with a valve-piece for controlling the valve thoroughfare,said valve-stem having a squared end, and a shield detachable with respect to the casing and entirely in- 5 closing the exposed end of the valve-stem, said shield having formed in its wall a squared depression capable of engagement over the valve stem end when the shield is detached.
4. In a fitting of the class described the combination of a casing provided with a relatively large inlet connection having a valve seat with a contracted opening therethrough, a valve-stem equipped with a valve piece for closing said contracted opening; a detachable shield operatively connected with respect to the casing to form a joint for preventing the escape of a medium under pressure, which shield entirely incloses the valve-stem end whenthe valve-piece is in its full open position, and a wireseal connected between said casingand said shield.
5. A fitting for systems utilizing high pressure embracing a valve-casing of cruc1- form contour having a central chamber in communication with which are horizontal and vertical extensioiis, of which one of the horizontal extensions co'mprises'a relatively large inlet having a valve-seat provided 13o.
with a contracted opening therethrough and 1 awaeee of which the other of said horizontal extensions is equipped with a valve-stem bushing having acentral screw-threaded opening, the fiat forward end of which bushing is projected well into said chamber, and an endwise movable screw-threaded valve-stem operative through said bushing provided with a cylindrical valve piece, the opposite ends of which are beveled, of which the outer beveled portion is operative for abutting against the sharp peripheral edge of the bushing opening in open position of the valve and the inner beveled portion is operative for abutting against the sharp peripheral edge of the said contracted opening in the closed position of said valve.
6. A fitting for systems utilizing high pressure embracing a valve casing provided with a relatively large inlet connection having extended thereacross a partition forming a valve-seat provided with a fiat face. having a contracted opening therethrough,
that portion of the-valve casing immediately beyond the contracted opening forming a combined separating and deposit chamber, a bushing within the casing provided with .a central screw-threaded opening, the fiat forward end of which bushing is projected Well into said chamber, an endwise movable screw-threaded valve-stem operative through said bushingprovided with a cylindrical valve-piece, the opposite ends of which are beveled, of which the outer beveled portion carried by the outer end of said valve-piece is operative for abutting against the sharp peripheral edge of the bushing opening in open position of the valve and the inner beveled portion is operative for abutting against the sharp peripheral edge of the said contracted opening in the closed position of said valve, and a short drill point for entering said contracted opening during the closing of thevalve, said drill point being substantially free of the said opening in the open position of the valve.
7. A fitting for systems utilizing high pressure embracing a valve casing of cruci- I form contour provided with a central chamber and horizontal and vertical extensions,
of which one of the' horizontal extensions comprises a relatively large inlet connection having extended thereacross' a partition forming a valve-seat having a contracted opening therethrough: and of which the other of said horizontal extensions f is equipped with a bushing projected into said chamber, the vertical extensions forming an closing said contracted opening,
outlet connection'and a deposit chamber respectively, piece operative through said bushing for which valve-piece in open position abuts against a valve-stem carrying a valve-- shield operatively connected with respect to the casingto form a jointto prevent the escape of a medium under pressurepassing through the casing, which shield entirely incloses the valve-stem end when the valve is in its full open position.
8. A fitting for systems utilizing high pressure embracing a casing provided with a relatively large inlet having a contracted thoroughfare therethrough, a valve-stem bushing, one end of which is projected an appreciable distance within the casing interior, a valve-stem carrying a valve-piece operative through the bushing for closing said contracted thoroughfare, which valvepiece normally abuts against said projected portion of the bushing to maintain a work- 1 ing thoroughfare of determined maximum. and a detachable shield entirely inclosing thoroughfare therethrough, a valve-stem bushing, one end of which is projected an appreciable distance within the casing interior, a valve-stem carrying a valve-piece operative through the bushing for closing said contracted thoroughfare, which valvepiece normally: abuts against said projected portion of the bushing to maintain -a working thoroughfare of determined maximum,
and a detachable shield entirely inclosing the valve-stem end in said normal position of the valve-stem, which shield is operatively disposed. to prevent the escape o a medium under pressure, and means ope a ely disposed to prevent the unauthorized detachment of said shield.
10. A fitting for systems utilizing high pressure embracing a casing provided with a relatively large inlet having a contracted thoroughfare therethrough, a valve-stem bushing having a central screw-threaded opening therethrough, one end of which bushing projects an appreciable distance within the casing interior, a valve-stem carrying a valve-piece operative through the bushing for closing said contracted thoroughfare, which valve-piece normally abuts against said projected. portion of the bushing to'maintain a Working thoroughfare of determined maximum and by such abutment serves to close the screw-threaded opening of said bushing and a detachable shield entirely inclosing the valvestem end in. said normal position. of the valve-piece,,which shield is operatively disposed to further prevent escape of a medium under pressurewhich may leak through said bushing opening as closed by said valve-piece.
11.- In a fitting of the class described, the
combination, of a casing having an inlet thoroughfare, a valve-stem and its complemental valve-piece for closing said thoroughfare and a shield detachable with respect to the casing 1. for entirely inclosing the exposed endiof said valve-stem which shield is shaped and proportioned 'for valvestenrengagement when detached from the a casing.

A fitting for systems utilizing high pressure embracing a; valve casing of cruciform contour having a central chamber in communication with horizontaland vertical extensions of whichone of the horizontal extensions comprises a relatlvely large inlet having a valve seat provided with a contracted opening therethrough, and of which the other of said horizontal extensions is equipped with a valve-stem bushing projected into said central chamber and disposed opposite said valve seat, the said vertical extensions forming an outlet connection and a depositchamber respectively, an endwise movable valve-stem carrying a valve-piece operative through said bushing for closing said contracted opening, which valve-piece being adapted to abut against the inner bushing end to maintain a normal working thoroughfare of determined maximum and a detachable shield operatively connected to form a joint to prevent the escape of a medium under pressure, which shield entirely incloses the valve-stem end when the valve is in its "free open position.
