To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonc lillt'rnnnn, a technologist, and a subject of the King of Viirtemberg, and a resident of Lederstrasse, in the city of Schwabisch-Gmtind, Kingdom of YViirtemberg, part of the German Empire, have invented a certain new andnseful Improved Self-Closing VVa'ter- Cock with Device to Prevent Bursting by Frost, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention is an improved water tap or cock having a valve adapted to close automatically under the pressure of the water supply, and which can be opened to any desired extent by means of a screw spindle. The valve and its casing can be easily separated from the body so that the operative parts of the valve can be easily repaired. The accompanying drawings illustrate a cock embodying the present invention, Figures 1 and 2 representing the cock in vertical section and showing the valve in two different positions; and Fig. 8 shows a slight modification of the cock body.
The cock may be constructed in the well known manner and has a body of any desired form having an inlet a and out-let 7), separated by a partition x in which is an opening around the exit end of which is an annular packing 2'. Above this opening the body has an internally threaded nipple y through which the valve casing z is introduced into the body. Said casing has an outer head 0 provided with a threaded portion engaging the nipple 3 and a packing 0 is interposed between head 0 and nipple y to make a water-tight joint therebetween. The lower or inner part of the casing 2 is cylindric and is adapted to impinge upon the packing 2' as shown, and form a watertight joint between the inner end of the valve casing and the partition 00, thus form ing, within the body, a closed valve-chamber which communicates with the inlet a through the opening in partition 00. Above chamber h the valve-casing has an axial bore 6, the upper part of which is threaded for the engagement of the spindle d, which has a hand-piece CZ, and may be packed by a ,stufiing box (Z as usual. From bore 6 above chamber h, radiate apertures '79 through which water can escape to the discharge outlet I), when the valve is open. v
The valve n'is adapted to move within chamber h and has an extension 0 depending through the opening in partition 00, and it also has a short stem f extending into the bore 6, said stem is preferably formed separate from the valve, and screwed thereinto as shown, and a washer m is thereby fastened to the upper end of the valve, and is adapted to seat against the upper end of chamber h when the valve is closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in which position the valve is closed, and no water can pass from chamber it into bore 6.

1. In combination, a body having an inlet an outlet and an intermediate partition with an opening, a valve casing screwed into the body opposite the partition and having its inner end seated on the said partition and containing a valve chamber communicating with said opening and having a bore above said chamber and a passage communicating with the outlet, a valve in said casing adapted to seat against the upper end of said chamber, a guide pin attached to said valve and extending into the bore, means engaging said guide pin to limit the opening movement of the valve, and means for open ing said valve against the pressure of the water.
2. In combination, a body having an inlet an outlet and an intermediate partition provided with an opening, a packing ring around the upper edge of this opening, a valve casing screwed into the body opposite the partition and having a hollow inner end seated upon the said packing and forming a valve chamber, said casing hav ing a passage leading from :said chamber above the valve seat and communicating with the outlet, a valve in said casing depending through the partition, a washer on the upper end of said valve adapted to seat against the upper end of said chamber, a 1
